CD PROJEKT RED’s cross-progression system lets you upload a save from one supported edition and load it on another using the same account. Mod compatibility is more conditional: enabled mods generally need to match, and an individual mod must support the target game build and platform.
How to move a save between editions
For supported transfers, use cross-progression rather than assuming a save file will work in every build. CD PROJEKT RED’s documented PS4-to-PS5 transfer and general cross-progression instructions both rely on an account-linked cloud save.
- Update the source game. Install the latest available patch for the edition that contains your save.
- Link the source game to your CD PROJEKT RED account. Use the account-linking option in the game.
- Create a save that uploads to the cloud. Confirm that the save shows the cloud icon before leaving the source edition.
- Link the same CD PROJEKT RED account on the destination edition.
- Open Load Game in the destination edition and select the cloud save.

What “Classic” and “Next-Gen” compatibility means
“Classic” often refers to the PC 1.32 branch, while “Next-Gen” usually means the 4.x update. CD PROJEKT RED announced that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered became available on September 29, 2026, as a free upgrade for existing owners, with cross-platform mod support among its changes: the publisher’s announcement. A contemporaneous report quotes the publisher confirming that existing saves carry over to Remastered: GamesRadar’s report.

That supports carrying existing saves forward to the upgrade; it does not prove that every save from Next-Gen or Remastered can be loaded backward into PC Classic 1.32. CD PROJEKT RED’s general support guidance explains cross-progression but does not provide a complete compatibility matrix for all PC build combinations. Treat reverse-direction loading as unconfirmed unless the exact game build or mod author documents it.
Will your mods come with the save?
Do not assume that account-linked subscriptions make a modded save portable. CD PROJEKT RED says cross-progression requires the same set of enabled mods on both platforms; a mod that is unavailable or unsupported on the destination can prevent the save from loading correctly. Check each mod’s platform availability and its author’s notes for the specific game build.

Mods containing XML, script files, or w3strings may need updates after a game update. The official guidance says REDkit includes a way to update them, but that does not make every mod compatible automatically. Read the official cross-platform mod support instructions and confirm the individual mod supports your target edition.

Both editions need compatible game content. CD PROJEKT RED says a save made with the base game can load in Complete Edition, but a Complete Edition save cannot load in a base-game installation unless it has all the expansions and DLC used by that save. Its cross-progression save requirements put it plainly: “In order to load saves via cross progression, it needs to have the same game content present.”

On consoles, a save made with mods enabled is marked with a mod.io cog, and trophies or achievements are disabled for modded saves, according to CD PROJEKT RED’s mod-support guidance.

If the destination cannot load the save
- No cloud save appears: verify both editions use the same CD PROJEKT RED account, update the source game, and make a new save that displays the cloud icon.
- The save is rejected: check that the destination has the expansions and DLC required by the save.
- The save uses mods: enable the same supported mod set on both ends, and confirm each mod works with the destination platform and build.
- You are moving from a newer branch to Classic 1.32: do not assume backward compatibility. Confirm the exact build combination with the relevant game or mod documentation.
