How to Build a Retirement Budget After a Professional Sports Career

A practical guide to planning after playing income ends: verify benefits, calendar every income source, map expenses, and test whether your plan works when earnings fall short.

Build your post-sports budget from income you can verify, benefits you have confirmed, and expenses your household actually owes—not from your former playing salary. Put taxes and health costs on their own lines, test the plan against a lower-income scenario, and revise it when work, benefits, health, or family circumstances change. The right budget depends on your sport, league, country, age, household, tax situation, and access to retirement accounts; there is no universal athlete retirement formula.

1. Start with a financial snapshot

Before deciding what you can spend, take stock of what you have, what you owe, and when playing income stopped or may stop. Use current statements and plan documents rather than memory. Record the date each figure was checked so you can spot stale information during reviews.

  • Cash and liquid reserves, kept separate from investments or accounts you cannot readily access.
  • Balances and recent statements for retirement accounts, investments, and other assets, including any restrictions or withdrawal terms.
  • Every debt, its balance, interest rate, minimum payment, and due date.
  • Household members, recurring commitments, and support you provide to dependants or relatives.
  • The date playing income ended or is expected to change, plus any known contract, benefit, or job start and end dates.

This snapshot is the starting point, not a forecast of how long your assets will last. That depends on your own income, spending, account access, and circumstances.

2. Build an income calendar, not a salary estimate

List each income source separately, with its current amount, payment frequency, expected start and end dates, tax treatment to confirm, and any costs required to earn it. Mark whether it is contractual, already approved, or uncertain. Do not count a potential job, endorsement, business sale, investment return, or benefit as guaranteed until its terms and timing are verified.

Income source What to verify
Pension or league benefit Eligibility, amount, payment start date, election options, and plan rules.
401(k) or other retirement account Account balance, access and withdrawal rules, taxes, and any plan-specific choices.
Second-career employment Written compensation, start date, payment schedule, and work-related expenses.
Endorsements or appearances Signed commitments, payment dates, duration, and costs such as representation or travel.
Business, rental, or investment income Recent records, recurring costs, taxes, liquidity, and how dependable the receipts are.
Social Security or other public benefits Whether you qualify, the applicable rules, and the amount and timing confirmed for you.

Convert irregular payments into a calendar so a strong month does not disguise a later shortfall. Keep gross income distinct from the amount available to spend after taxes and income-related costs.

Test three planning cases

These are decision scenarios, not predictions. Recalculate them when you have better information.

Case What to include What it helps you decide
Lower-income Confirmed income only, with optional work or commercial earnings reduced or excluded. Whether essential obligations can be met without relying on uncertain receipts.
Expected Confirmed income plus work or other receipts supported by realistic, current evidence. How the household could operate under your present best-supported outlook.
Higher-income Potential work or business and commercial earnings, identified separately as uncertain. Which goals could be funded if those receipts arrive, without treating them as necessary for basic spending.

A professional football career can end suddenly, as the Professional Footballers’ Association noted in its May 11, 2020 MyProPlan announcement. That makes it useful to know what spending remains affordable if expected work does not materialize.

3. Find your spending baseline from actual obligations

Use statements, invoices, and payment records to work out what the household spends. Start with essential obligations, then decide what optional spending fits the lower-income case. There is no supported fixed percentage for each budget category.

Category Examples to record
Essential fixed Housing, utilities, insurance premiums, required debt payments, and basic household costs.
Essential variable Food, transportation, health care, and out-of-pocket medical spending.
Family and support Dependants, education, caregiving, and recurring help for relatives or others.
Career transition Education, credentials, job search, relocation, or business costs, if applicable.
Discretionary Travel, vehicles, recreation, gifts, and optional purchases.
Irregular Property repairs, annual insurance, taxes, major medical costs, and other bills that do not arrive monthly.

For irregular costs, record the likely bill and due date, then set aside money in advance if your cash flow allows. Do not omit a cost just because it is not billed every month. Once your categories are populated, compare the amount left after essential obligations with the discretionary spending and goals you want to fund.

4. Budget taxes and health care as separate obligations

Taxes

Ask a qualified tax professional familiar with the relevant income types and jurisdictions to estimate your obligations. A career may involve income connected to more than one place, and tax residence, work location, and the kind of payment can affect the result. Wells Fargo Advisors’ athlete guide discusses multi-state taxation and domicile, but it is a commercial publication and its tax discussion may become outdated; do not use a generic athlete tax rate as your personal estimate.

Health coverage and care

List premiums, deductibles, co-pays, ongoing treatment, and costs for dependants based on your actual coverage and care needs. Confirm what coverage continues after leaving a team or league and when it ends; eligibility and arrangements vary.

For former NFL players, NFL Life Line lists benefits and insurance information. It describes the 88 Plan as reimbursing specified health costs for vested players with dementia, ALS, or Parkinson’s disease. This is not general health insurance and is not described as a benefit for every NFL retiree.

5. Verify benefits with the plan that governs them

Do not infer a pension amount or account access from league membership or a former contract. For a former NFL player, NFL resources list pension and 401(k) investments, insurance, financial guidance, and transition support. Confirm your own eligibility, elections, payment dates, and amounts against current plan documents and the relevant benefits office. NFLPA’s former-player benefits page is a place to begin; personal terms come from your plan.

NFL Life Line describes The Trust as a transition resource covering financial, career, health, education, personal-interaction, and lifestyle needs. It also lists financial-assistance organizations for eligible former players experiencing hardship. These programs have their own eligibility rules; they are not replacement income that every former player receives.

For professional footballers in the United Kingdom, the PFA’s May 2020 announcement described MyProPlan as covering financial foundations, budgeting, retirement, saving, income protection, debt costs, pension planning, and review of progress. Because that description dates to the tool’s launch, check with the PFA to confirm present availability and terms before relying on it. Neither the NFL resources nor the PFA service should be assumed to apply to athletes in other leagues or countries.

6. Make debt and reserves fit your actual situation

List minimum payments and balances first. Then distinguish debts that are costly or urgent from debts with lower rates. Whether to pay a balance down faster depends on your tax position, need for accessible cash, and investment consequences; discuss the trade-offs with a qualified adviser rather than assuming that paying every debt immediately is always best.

Set a cash-reserve goal based on household needs, the reliability and timing of income, and access to other funds. The available league and professional-association resources do not establish a universal months-of-expenses target for retired athletes. Avoid adopting a number as a rule without considering your own circumstances.

7. Choose a tracking method and review when life changes

A spreadsheet, budgeting app, or paper workbook can all work if you update them. Choose a method that can track irregular income and bills, protect your financial information, share relevant household figures if needed, and export records for an accountant or adviser. If you have income or expenses in more than one currency or jurisdiction, check that the tool handles them clearly.

NFL Life Line describes a Money Management International workbook created for NFL-related budget management and financial education. That description supports the use of a workbook as a budgeting aid; it does not establish that the NFL-related workbook is sold to the public or available through a particular retailer.

Check monthly cash flow and revisit the full plan after a material change: a job or business shift, move, health event, benefit decision, major purchase, or change in household responsibilities. The PFA’s MyProPlan description emphasizes tracking goals and progress and reviewing finances when objectives change; a monthly cash-flow check is a practical routine, not a league-prescribed rule.

8. Assess professional help before choosing an adviser

An adviser who understands athlete or entertainment-industry income may help coordinate retirement planning, investments, tax questions, insurance, and estate matters. NFLPA says its individual registered financial advisers are vetted against educational, experiential, and regulatory standards and may provide planning, investment, tax, and estate services. This is a league-specific resource, not an endorsement of every adviser or a guarantee of suitability for your situation.

Before hiring anyone, compare credentials and regulatory registration, relevant experience, the services included, fees and potential conflicts, who will hold your assets, and whether recommendations are explained in terms you understand. Ask how the adviser is paid and what, if anything, is outside the engagement. Verify credentials and terms independently before sharing account access or moving money.

Your finished budget should make three things visible: what income is confirmed, what essential spending must be met, and what choices change if uncertain income falls short. It is an educational planning framework, not individualized tax, legal, investment, or benefits advice; an individual budget requires your jurisdiction, plan terms, income dates and amounts, account access, household obligations, debts, and health coverage.
