How Much Should Professional Athletes Save Before Retiring?

Professional athletes should base retirement savings on the gap between expected post-career spending and dependable income—not a one-size-fits-all number. Here’s how to estimate that gap and account for benefits, assets, debt, and uncertainty.

There is no universal savings amount or percentage for professional athletes. The right target is the amount needed to help cover post-career spending after dependable income—such as a pension the athlete is eligible to receive—has been accounted for. Estimate that income gap, then plan for the assets and savings needed to fund it over the athlete’s retirement horizon.

How to calculate a retirement savings target

The U.S. Department of Labor’s general retirement guidance recommends estimating the nest egg needed to provide income that will not come from other sources, then estimating how much must be saved to reach that goal. For an athlete, the calculation should reflect the timing and uncertainty of a playing career, as well as the athlete’s own finances.

  1. Estimate spending after competition. Separate essential and discretionary costs. Include housing, family support, health coverage, taxes, and—if relevant—the costs of relocating or preparing for a next career.
  2. Inventory resources and obligations. List savings, investments, cash reserves, debts, and other liabilities. Distinguish assets that can readily fund spending from assets that are difficult or costly to access.
  3. Verify benefits before counting them. Check the athlete’s eligibility, vesting, payment start date, amount, survivor options, tax treatment, and restrictions against current plan documents and the athlete’s own record.
  4. Estimate dependable post-career income. Include only income sources that are sufficiently established for the forecast, and account for when each one begins.
  5. Calculate the annual gap. Subtract dependable post-career income from expected spending. The remaining amount is the annual gap that savings, investments, or other resources may need to help fund.
  6. Model the gap over time. Consider the intended retirement date and a suitably long period of income needs. Make assumptions explicit and account for uncertainty in investment returns, inflation, taxes, health, and longevity.

This framework identifies the question to solve; it does not produce a single reliable target without the athlete’s personal numbers. The sources cited here do not establish a universal athlete savings percentage, savings multiple, or withdrawal rate.

What belongs in the estimate

Spending after the playing career

Current spending may not match future spending. A household may have new health-coverage costs, continued family obligations, a different home or location, or expenses tied to training for a second career. Estimate these costs for the life the athlete expects to lead, rather than assuming that every expense will fall when competition ends.

Assets, liquidity, and debt

A headline net-worth figure can obscure whether funds are available to pay bills. Record cash and readily accessible investments separately from assets that cannot be converted into spending money quickly or without substantial cost. Include liabilities as well as assets: debt payments reduce the resources available for retirement spending.

Taxes, insurance, and investment risk

Expected income and spending should be considered alongside taxes and insurance needs. Investment assumptions also matter: the amount an athlete needs depends partly on how the assets are invested and on the risk the athlete can tolerate. A 2002 SEC no-action letter reproduces NFLPA program materials that call for considering assets and liquidity, short- and long-term liabilities, diversification, risk tolerance, financial objectives and sophistication, and tax, estate, insurance, and retirement planning. That historical letter describes program materials at the time; it is not a current plan document or individualized advice.

How to treat league benefits in the calculation

Benefits can change the size of the income gap, but eligibility, value, and timing depend on the sport, league, country, and specific plan. Check the applicable plan directly and confirm the athlete’s record before including a benefit in a forecast. An outline or summary may help explain a plan, but it may not control if it conflicts with official plan documents.

The NFLPA’s former-player benefits information describes resources including a pension, the Second Career Savings Plan, an annuity, capital accumulation, insurance, and health-related programs. Eligibility and distribution rules differ among plans and depend on plan rules and credited seasons. The NFLPA also describes five years of Continuing Vets Coverage for vested players following retirement. An athlete should confirm current eligibility, coverage, and distribution terms in the relevant official documents rather than assume every listed benefit applies.

NFL pension figures are plan-specific, not a general athlete target

The NFLPA pension FAQ states that vested players are eligible for lifetime monthly pension benefits at age 55. The amount depends on credited seasons, when benefits begin, and the payment form. The FAQ, accessed in 2026, lists these monthly benefit credits for each credited season in the stated bands:

Credited season band Published monthly benefit credit per credited season
1998–2011 $470
2012–2014 $560
2015–2017 $660
2018–2020 $760

These are NFL plan-specific figures published in the NFLPA FAQ, not a promise of an individual benefit or figures for other leagues. The same FAQ gives an example of $3,600 per month at age 55 for a player with five credited seasons spanning 2016–2020. Treat that as an illustrative example, not a typical amount or a retirement savings target; the athlete’s record and official plan terms determine applicability.

Why a playing-career end date does not settle the question

The date an athlete stops competing and the date a benefit begins may not be the same. A forecast should show the years between the end of playing income and the start of dependable benefits, as well as the income needed after benefits begin. Eligibility, vesting, commencement timing, and payment choices can all affect that timeline.

Plans also differ across sports and jurisdictions. NFLPA materials apply to the relevant NFL participants; they cannot establish benefits for athletes in other leagues or countries. Those athletes should consult their own league and plan documents, together with qualified professionals familiar with the applicable jurisdiction.

When and how to revisit the plan

A retirement estimate is a working plan, not a permanent number. Revisit it when earnings, contracts, family needs, benefits, tax rules, health, or intended retirement timing change. The Department of Labor’s Savings Fitness guide likewise recommends revisiting estimates as circumstances change.

  • Update the spending estimate when household costs or post-career plans change.
  • Recheck benefit eligibility and timing against current official plan documents.
  • Update assets, debts, and liquidity rather than relying on an old net-worth estimate.
  • Review the assumptions used for inflation, investment returns, taxes, health costs, and the length of time income may be needed.

Choosing help with an athlete’s financial plan

For personal decisions, an athlete may benefit from an appropriately qualified financial planner and a tax professional who understand the athlete’s sport and jurisdiction. Review relevant licensing and qualifications, fees, conflicts of interest, and the scope of advice before engaging an advisor.

The NFLPA describes a Registered Player Financial Advisor program for NFL players. Its program designation is not an endorsement or recommendation of an individual advisor, and registration does not guarantee results. Application requirements and windows can change; the NFLPA application page says its initial 2027 application period has ended. Confirm current details directly with the NFLPA.
