If you want one game that samples several sides of modern Sonic, start with SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS. It combines a remaster of Sonic Generations, with Classic and Modern Sonic stages, and a new Shadow campaign. Prefer the original side-scrolling style? Choose Sonic Origins. Want a large map to explore? Choose Sonic Frontiers. These are recommendations by gameplay style, not an official story order or a ranking of difficulty.
Which Sonic game should a beginner start with?
For a broad first taste, choose SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS. SEGA describes it as including a remastered Sonic Generations and a new Shadow campaign; the Sonic stages include both Classic and Modern styles. That makes it a useful sampler if you are not yet sure which kind of Sonic game you like. SEGA announced its release for October 25, 2024. SEGA’s release announcement and its overview describe the contents.
No official source cited here establishes that it is the easiest entry, and this guide does not rank the games by difficulty. Instead, use the style you want as your deciding factor:
- Want classic side-scrolling levels? Start with Sonic Origins.
- Want a mixture of Classic and Modern stages, plus a Shadow campaign? Start with SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS.
- Want exploration, puzzles, and action-adventure? Start with Sonic Frontiers.
Pick the game that matches how you want to play
SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS: a sampler of different stage styles
The Sonic Generations portion brings together stages featuring Classic and Modern Sonic, while the separate new campaign focuses on Shadow. Choose it if you would like to try more than one high-speed stage style without committing to a strictly classic or exploration-first game. The documented contents support that recommendation; they do not establish a difficulty advantage over the alternatives.

Sonic Origins: a classic 2D starting point
Sonic Origins is the direct choice if you want to begin with early side-scrolling Sonic. SEGA’s official manual lists four featured games: Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Pick it for the classic format rather than an open map or the Modern stages in Sonic Generations.
Sonic Frontiers: exploration and action-adventure
Sonic Frontiers takes a different approach from a classic 2D platformer. SEGA describes its Open-Zone map as featuring challenges, battles, puzzles, side quests, and Cyber Space levels. It also offers an Action Style control option. In its November 8, 2022 release announcement, SEGA called Action Style “an accessible control style that allows players to enjoy accurate platforming action,” contrasting it with High Speed Style’s traditional high-speed controls. Read SEGA’s description if you want to understand that distinction before choosing.

What to expect from sales figures—and what they do not tell you
SEGA reported that SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS surpassed one million units worldwide in a figure covering physical and downloaded titles across platforms, based on SEGA’s internal data, in its October 28, 2024 announcement. SEGA later said Sonic Frontiers had reached five million units worldwide as of August 14, 2026. These are dated publisher sales figures, not measures of which game is best for a beginner or how difficult either game is. See SEGA’s 2024 announcement and its 2026 announcement.
Where should you go after your first game?
Let the gameplay decide. If you enjoy SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS’ Classic stages, move to Sonic Origins for more early 2D Sonic. If its Modern stages are more your speed, continue with other Modern-style entries. If what you want is a larger world with optional activities, try Sonic Frontiers. There is no need to follow a story order to use this route: it is a way to explore different formats, not a claim about continuity.
