Each game uses exploration differently.
How Pokémon moved from routes to open-world exploration
The shift is best understood as a series of design experiments, not a steady increase in map size. The key differences are how the world connects, how players choose where to go, what they do while exploring, and how exploration advances the adventure.
Sword and Shield: an open area within a structured region
The Wild Area was a major step toward freer exploration: a vast stretch of Galarian wilderness connecting towns and cities, where players can control the camera and encounter Pokémon that vary by location and weather. But it is one area within Galar, not an entirely open region. The rest of the adventure retains a more structured progression. Pokémon’s official Wild Area description presents it as part of the region.
This design made roaming feel different without removing the broader structure of a Pokémon journey. Players could explore a large space more freely, while the Wild Area remained a distinct part of a region organized around towns and progression.

Legends: Arceus: expeditions, observation, and research
Legends: Arceus changes the basic rhythm. Jubilife Village acts as a home base, and players set out from it into separate natural areas rather than moving through one continuous region. On expeditions, they observe Pokémon, catch them directly or enter seamless battles, and complete research tasks.
Research is not just an optional activity alongside exploration: completing Pokédex tasks raises the player’s rank, and rank progression opens access to more areas. The result is a loop of preparing in the village, surveying the landscape, gathering information, and earning access to further excursions. Scarlet and Violet: a seamless region and three story paths
Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet make the strongest break from bounded areas. Towns blend into the wilderness without borders, Pokémon appear throughout the region, and players can move among three main storylines: Victory Road, Path of Legends, and Starfall Street. Koraidon or Miraidon helps with traversal across varied terrain.
The important change is both spatial and narrative: the region is continuous, and players can weave between major objectives rather than follow a single fixed story order. Nintendo described the games as taking “a new evolutionary step in the Pokémon main series” in its 2022 announcement. That is Nintendo’s characterization, while the specific open-world and story-path features are described in the official game overview.

Nintendo’s US store lists the physical Nintendo Switch edition of Pokémon Scarlet with a release date of November 18, 2022 and GAME FREAK as developer. This product listing is specific to the US store; availability elsewhere may differ.
Legends: Z-A: urban exploration through wild zones
Pokémon Legends: Z-A offers another model rather than simply repeating Paldea’s continuous countryside. Its setting is Lumiose City, where constructed wild zones provide places for Pokémon to live and be caught. Players can throw Poké Balls while exploring; some Pokémon flee, making approach and stealth relevant. Battle zones appear at night.

Here, the city itself is the organizing structure, with exploration focused on particular wild and battle zones. It is a distinct format from a seamless region of towns and wilderness. The official Legends: Z-A site describes its setting and gameplay features.

What changed—and what “open world” means here
Across these games, openness describes several different choices rather than one fixed formula. The Wild Area opened up roaming inside a still-structured region. Legends: Arceus made discrete expeditions and research the engine of exploration. Scarlet and Violet joined towns and wilderness and gave players greater choice in story order. Legends: Z-A centers exploration on wild zones within a city.
