Vehicles in Final Fantasy are not one shared system: each game gives its mounts and machines different jobs. Chocobos can be mounts or specialized traversal tools, while airships can open up a wider world or embody a setting’s technology. Other vehicles handle particular terrain, unlock story routes, or turn travel into a race.
What vehicles are in Final Fantasy?
There is no single franchise-wide roster with identical abilities. A chocobo that helps cross terrain in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is not evidence that chocobos work the same way in every entry. The useful way to compare vehicles is by the game they appear in, the terrain they cover, how the player gains access to them, and whether their purpose is travel, exploration, competition, or story.
| Vehicle or mount | Game and role | Access or use |
|---|---|---|
| Chocobos | Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: mounts with terrain-specific traversal abilities | Wild chocobos can be caught and called within their home region, according to Square Enix’s Rebirth world guide. |
| Buggy | Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: faster than chocobos and suited to sandy terrain and shallow water | Square Enix describes its terrain and speed, but the cited page does not state an unlock condition. |
| Wheelie | Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: a two-wheeled, self-balancing vehicle for exploring Costa del Sol | Used in a local area; the cited page does not state a broader travel role. |
| Tiny Bronco | Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: Cid Highwind’s aircraft, used to provide flights | It lands at old airstrips, making those locations part of its access pattern. |
| Airship | Final Fantasy III: a means of faster, freer world exploration once secured | The Nintendo-hosted manual describes its exploration benefit; its instructions apply to that game’s version, not the whole series. |
| Airship | Final Fantasy X: transport tied to the Al Bhed and the game’s story and technology | Square Enix describes it as recovered from ocean ruins and repaired to full operation by the Al Bhed. |
Why are airships important in Final Fantasy?
They can change the scale of exploration
An airship may turn a world from a sequence of reachable routes into a place the player can cross more quickly and freely. The Final Fantasy III manual puts that change plainly: “When you secure the Airship, you’ll be able to explore the world quickly and freely.” It also says, “When you’re riding Chocobos or Airships, enemies in the field cannot attack.” These are specific instructions for the manual’s game version, not general rules for every Final Fantasy.
They can make the world’s technology part of the story
In Final Fantasy X, an airship is more than a convenient way to move. The official feature describes a craft recovered from ancient ocean ruins and repaired to full operation by the Al Bhed. It is equipped to face Sin, with battle armaments and a sphere-search function. Its history and capabilities connect transport to the people who operate it, the world’s technology, and the story’s central danger. Square Enix’s feature on the airship provides that account.

What do chocobos do?
In Rebirth, they are mounts with different traversal specialties
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth gives chocobos distinct jobs tied to terrain. Square Enix says they can be caught in the wild and called within their home region. The world guide describes mountain chocobos climbing marked steep slopes, sky chocobos gliding from launch ranges, ocean chocobos crossing water, and forest chocobos using mushrooms and branches. These abilities make chocobos a designed traversal system in Rebirth; they should not be assumed to apply in other entries. See the official Rebirth world guide.
They can also be racers
In Final Fantasy XIV, Chocobo Racing at the Gold Saucer is a separate competitive activity, not merely a travel mechanic. The official Lodestone guide lists level 15 and completion of “So You Want to Be a Jockey” as prerequisites. It describes training, rating progression, and breeding retired chocobos to pass on traits. For current requirements and steps, consult the live Chocobo Racing guide, since game details can change.

How do Rebirth’s other vehicles differ?
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth uses vehicles for different terrain and purposes rather than treating them as interchangeable rides. Square Enix describes the buggy as faster than chocobos and capable of crossing sandy terrain and shallow water. The wheelie is a self-balancing two-wheeler used to explore Costa del Sol, while Cid Highwind’s Tiny Bronco is an aircraft that lands at old airstrips to provide flights. The page does not give a common speed comparison for all three or spell out each vehicle’s unlock conditions, so their documented differences are terrain, local use, and access points.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When are vehicles more than transportation?
Vehicles can support leisure and competition as well as map traversal. In Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Square Enix groups G-Bike and chocobo races among the game’s minigames. Final Fantasy XIV Chocobo Racing likewise makes chocobos the focus of a Gold Saucer competition, with training and progression. Together these examples show why “vehicle” does not always mean a faster way to get somewhere: it can also be a game activity in its own right. The Rebirth examples appear in Square Enix’s world guide, and the FFXIV activity is covered by the official Lodestone guide.

How to read a vehicle’s role in a particular game
- Check the terrain: Is it meant for land, water, air, steep slopes, or a specific local area?
- Look at movement: Does it add speed, climbing, gliding, or access to a route the player could not otherwise use?
- Notice the access rule: The vehicle may be tied to a region, an airstrip, an unlock, or a quest; these conditions differ by game.
- Ask what it is for: It may serve exploration, travel, combat avoidance, racing, or a story beat.
- Consider who operates it: A vehicle’s builder, owner, or operator can reveal something about the world’s technology and its people, as the Al Bhed airship does in Final Fantasy X.
