The right card depends on which Nintendo 3DS model you own: original 3DS, 3DS XL and 2DS systems take SD or SDHC cards; New Nintendo 3DS, New 3DS XL and New 2DS XL systems take microSD or microSDHC. For all of these systems, choose a card no larger than 32 GB. Nintendo does not consider SDXC or microSDXC cards compatible. For formatting, Nintendo recommends the SD Association’s SD Memory Card Formatter; its guidance does not explicitly name FAT32 as a requirement.
What SD card works with a Nintendo 3DS?
Check the model name and card slot before buying. The original 3DS family uses a full-size SD card slot, while the New 3DS family uses a microSD slot. Nintendo’s compatible card classes and capacities are:

These are Nintendo’s stated compatibility categories. Nintendo cautions that it cannot guarantee every third-party card will work. See Nintendo’s SD and microSD compatibility guidance.
Choosing a card in practice
A 32 GB SDHC card is the largest capacity in Nintendo’s stated range for an original 3DS, 3DS XL or 2DS. A 32 GB microSDHC card is the equivalent choice for a New Nintendo 3DS, New 3DS XL or New 2DS XL. The card’s physical size matters: a microSD card needs an SD adapter in an original-family system, but goes directly into a New-family system.

Does the 3DS support SDXC?
No. Nintendo states that “SDXC and microSDXC cards are not considered compatible.” That applies to SDXC cards in original-family systems and microSDXC cards in New-family systems. A larger capacity does not make an SDXC card a suitable replacement for an SDHC or microSDHC card. Nintendo’s compatibility page also notes that third-party card operation is not guaranteed.
Should my 3DS SD card be FAT32?
Nintendo’s retrieved 3DS guidance does not explicitly state that a card must use FAT32, so it is not accurate to present FAT32 as Nintendo’s named requirement. Nintendo instead recommends formatting with the SD Association’s SD Memory Card Formatter. On its US support page, Nintendo says to select Overwrite format. Follow the formatter’s current instructions and select the card carefully, because formatting erases its contents. See Nintendo’s format instructions.

Can I use a microSD card in a 3DS?
Yes, depending on the model. A New Nintendo 3DS, New 3DS XL or New 2DS XL uses microSD directly. An original Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL or 2DS can use a microSD card only with a suitable microSD-to-SD adapter. In either case, stay within Nintendo’s compatible classes and capacities: microSD up to 2 GB or microSDHC from 4 GB through 32 GB.

Formatting deletes card contents. Before formatting or replacing a card, copy its existing contents to a computer or make another backup. Nintendo says the card can hold photos and music, downloaded software other than DSiWare, and data used by some software; what is saved varies by title. The system should be turned off before ordinary card insertion or removal.

- Turn off the 3DS. Do this before removing the existing card or inserting another one.
- Copy the card’s contents to a computer. Use a card slot or a compatible USB card reader. For a replacement card, Nintendo’s operations manual describes transferring the complete Nintendo 3DS folder to the new card using a computer and card reader/writer.
- Format the replacement only if needed. Use the SD Association SD Memory Card Formatter as Nintendo recommends; the US support instructions specify Overwrite format. Confirm the selected device is the 3DS card before starting.
- Restore the copied folder. Copy the complete Nintendo 3DS folder to the replacement card, preserving its folder structure.
- Install the card in the correct slot. Use SD or microSD as appropriate for the console, and an SD adapter only for microSD in an original-family system.
