The right card depends on which 3DS model you own. Nintendo lists standard SD and SDHC limits for the original 3DS, while New 3DS-family systems use microSD cards. To move data safely, copy the entire card—including the complete Nintendo 3DS folder—to a blank destination card. Nintendo’s cited manuals and support pages do not specify a formatting procedure or establish support for cards above the stated 32 GB limit.
Which SD card fits your 3DS?
Check the console model before choosing a card: the original 3DS family and the New 3DS family use different card arrangements.
| Console | Card arrangement | Nintendo-stated capacity |
|---|---|---|
| Original 3DS-family models | Standard SD slot. A microSD card needs an SD adapter. | SD cards up to 2 GB; SDHC cards from 4 GB through 32 GB, according to Nintendo’s 3DS instruction manual. |
| New 3DS-family models | microSD card; follow the model-specific instructions. | The cited New 3DS manual does not establish a general higher-capacity limit. See Nintendo’s New Nintendo 3DS instruction manual. |
Nintendo’s original 3DS manual says, in translation, that the system supports SD memory cards up to 2 GB and SDHC memory cards from 4 GB to 32 GB. Do not treat that as confirmation that a 64 GB or larger card works across the 3DS family: the cited sources do not establish an official higher-capacity recommendation or universal procedure.
Can you use microSD in an original 3DS?
Yes, with an SD adapter: the original model’s slot accepts the adapter as a unit. Turn the console off before removing the card unless an in-game instruction says otherwise. Nintendo warns that pulling the microSD card out while leaving its adapter in the console can cause malfunction or data loss.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Can you put an original 3DS SD card in a New 3DS?
No. The New model has a microSD slot, so an original 3DS SD card will not fit directly. For a model change, use Nintendo’s system-transfer or computer-copy instructions rather than trying to insert the old card into the new console.
How to copy a 3DS card to a replacement card
Use a computer with an SD slot or a card reader/writer. Nintendo’s instructions call for copying the whole card to a blank destination, not selecting only the files you recognize.

- Back up any files you need from the destination card, then ensure it is blank before copying.
- Insert the source card into the computer, using an appropriate reader or adapter if needed.
- Copy every file and folder from the source card, including the entire
Nintendo 3DSfolder. - Copy the contents to the top-level directory of the blank destination card. Do not place them inside an extra enclosing folder.
- Safely eject the card, then put it in the console for which the data is intended.
The Nintendo 3DS folder contains downloaded software and save data. Do not rename it or alter, move, or delete files inside it. Nintendo’s transfer instructions describe the full-card copy, and its microSD computer-management guidance warns against changing the folder’s contents.
Nintendo’s PC microSD-management feature is for managing a card over a computer connection; it is not a replacement for copying the full contents when migrating to a new physical card. For card-to-card migration, use the copy procedure above.

How to transfer data when changing consoles
The right route depends on the source and destination models, how much data you have, and whether the destination has enough free space. Nintendo provides local wireless system transfers as well as computer-copy guidance.
Original 3DS to New 3DS
The old SD card cannot be inserted in the New 3DS microSD slot. Follow Nintendo’s 3DS/3DS LL/2DS to New 3DS-family transfer guide and choose a supported transfer path. If the destination microSD does not have enough free space for the data, Nintendo says to clear unneeded data or choose the lower-capacity transfer path; that path requires re-downloading software afterward.

New 3DS to New 3DS
Complete the system transfer, then move the source microSD card to the destination system as instructed by Nintendo. Its New 3DS manual says source-card data is usable only on the destination after the transfer; leaving the card in the old console can mean some software save data is not usable on the new one.
Wireless transfer or computer copy?
Wireless transfer avoids manually copying card contents, but time depends on the data amount. Nintendo’s Easy transfer guide estimates about two hours for a full 4 GB of data over local wireless; this is an estimate, not a guaranteed duration. Nintendo describes computer copying as a relatively quick method for larger data amounts, provided you have a computer and suitable card reader.

How should you format an SD card for a 3DS?
The cited Nintendo manuals and support pages do not specify a required file system or give a card-formatting procedure. They therefore do not support attributing a particular format, computer utility, or workaround for larger cards to Nintendo.
Quick Recap
- Back up files you need before formatting or otherwise changing a card.
- For an original 3DS, use a card capacity Nintendo lists for that model: SD up to 2 GB or SDHC from 4 GB through 32 GB.
- For moving existing data, follow Nintendo’s full-copy directions instead of formatting or modifying the source card.
