You can give The Witcher 3 a softer, more painterly look without sacrificing readable subtitles, recognizable shapes, or scene detail—but there is no universally best preset. Start with the remaster’s built-in image and HDR controls, adjust one setting at a time, and judge the result in several kinds of scenes. Add PC post-processing only if those controls are not enough.
Confirm your platform and game version first
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered launched on September 29, 2026, as a free same-platform upgrade for existing owners. CD PROJEKT RED says the remaster updates tone mapping and HDR calibration, alongside textures and models based on HD Reworked Project assets and changes to lighting, bloom, reflections, and other effects. Those rendering changes mean advice made for the older PC build or its presets may not transfer directly. Check that you are running the remaster on your platform before changing settings. CD PROJEKT RED’s remaster announcement and its official change list describe the upgrade; neither specifies a painterly configuration.
“Painterly” is a matter of taste, not a named visual mode with one correct setup. Treat the adjustments below as a way to explore the look on your own display, not as a tested or guaranteed preset.
Begin with the remaster’s built-in image controls
- Open the game’s image and HDR calibration controls. Start with the controls available in your remaster build rather than importing an old preset.
- Change only one control at a time. Make a modest adjustment, then compare it with your previous image. Keeping a before-and-after view makes it easier to tell which change helped and which one reduced clarity.
- Protect dark and bright detail. Look for detail in shadowed areas as well as bright skies and pale surfaces. If dark areas merge into a single mass or bright areas lose useful definition, undo or reduce the change.
The official notes confirm updated tone mapping and more HDR calibration options, but they do not identify an ideal value or setting for a painterly effect. The right balance depends on your display and preferences.

Check the image where readability matters
After each meaningful change, inspect the same scenes and interface elements. Check dialogue and subtitles, the HUD, faces, foliage, dark interiors, night scenes, and bright daylight. Pay special attention to high-contrast edges: heavy grading or sharpening can make them look artificially outlined, while excessive softness can blur forms that help you read the scene.
- Back off if subtitles or HUD text lose contrast. A pleasing background treatment is not useful if pale text blends into the image.
- Back off if foliage becomes a noisy mass. Leaves and branches should remain distinguishable rather than collapsing into visual clutter.
- Back off if shadows swallow objects or edges look unnaturally outlined. Keep enough contrast and definition to recognize forms.
These are practical self-checks, not results from a controlled readability test. The cited sources do not provide benchmarked settings for text clarity or detail retention.

On PC, consider one post-processing layer if needed
If the built-in controls do not produce the grading you want, PC players can consider a ReShade preset or a color-grading mod. The RenoDX listing describes post-processing and color-grading adjustments and cautions users about ReShade presets and HDR. Read the current file notes and requirements before installing anything, and confirm that its author or users identify it as compatible with the September 2026 remaster. If that information is missing, treat compatibility as unconfirmed.
Use one post-processing layer at a time. Combining several effects makes it harder to identify what is changing the image, and it can undermine the clarity you are trying to preserve. The available evidence does not establish a best preset, a measured performance cost, or a readability winner.

Judge presets in different places and conditions
A fixed ReShade preset can look different as weather, time of day, and location change, and it can also behave differently with display settings. The Wild Hunt Re-Imagined page explicitly notes this limitation. Do not choose a preset from a single screenshot: check it in an interior and an exterior, in daylight and at night, and in more than one weather condition. Recheck text and shadow detail in those settings, too.
Do you need the old HD Reworked mod?
Do not assume so. CD PROJEKT RED says the remaster already updates various textures and models based on HD Reworked Project assets. The older HD Reworked Project listing includes OldGen-specific directions and optional ReShade information; that does not establish compatibility with the 2026 remaster. Check its current version notes before considering an installation, rather than adding it automatically.

There is no cited comparison establishing which approach best preserves readability, remains consistent in changing light, or has the lowest performance impact. Choose based on your platform and the controls you need, then evaluate the result in your own setup.
Keep the modding tools in perspective
CD PROJEKT RED describes REDkit as a toolkit for creators to edit game content such as quests, items, characters, animations, storylines, and territories. It supports the broader modding ecosystem, but it is not a consumer post-processing product for applying a painterly filter.
