Those are contrasting design intentions, not an objective ranking of which game looks best.
What art direction changes when you explore an open world
Art direction is more than a palette or a level of visual detail. It shapes what a place seems to be, what you notice while crossing it, and whether distant landmarks feel welcoming, threatening, or steeped in history. For this comparison, the useful questions are how each game differentiates regions, uses visual contrast, suggests a past, and makes space readable from its chosen camera perspective.
The developers’ descriptions explain the aims behind those choices; the experience they produce is ultimately a matter of interpretation. The Witcher 3, Skyrim, and Elden Ring are specific case studies, not stand-ins for every open-world RPG.
How does The Witcher 3’s art style compare to Skyrim?
The Witcher 3: regions with their own atmosphere
CD Projekt RED said it did not want The Witcher 3 to have one “singular theme.” Instead, the studio described a world of varied environments, each with its own atmosphere, communities, and memorable characters. Its 2013 announcement also connected changes in the setting to player decisions, major local plots, and side quests. That makes regional variety part of the game’s storytelling approach, rather than simply a change of scenery.

Environment Art Director Michał Janiszewski described the care behind that sense of place: the team considered regional references and specific environmental details. He recalled that “we were moving the whole mountain to open the vista because they wanted to add something to the vibe.” The anecdote captures a practical art-direction choice: even a large landscape feature can be adjusted to make a view better express the intended mood.
The likely effect is an exploration rhythm in which scenery helps distinguish one local context from another. A region can feel socially and narratively specific, not just visually different. That does not mean every player will read a landscape the same way, or that atmosphere alone tells you what choices to make.

Skyrim: concept art sets a tone for the setting
Bethesda’s account of Skyrim’s art development emphasizes concept art as a way to establish tone and setting. Its described references ranged from artists’ own experiences of landscapes to fantasy literature, architecture, and iconography. This points to a different useful lens on the game: look at how broad artistic and real-world influences are combined to make its setting feel coherent.
When comparing the two games, notice both the visual identity of a region and the cues that make its architecture, landscape, or landmarks feel as though they belong to a particular world. CD Projekt RED speaks explicitly about varied regional atmospheres and communities; Bethesda’s feature describes the foundations of Skyrim’s visual language. Neither source establishes a direct ranking of the finished games.

Does Elden Ring feel different from The Witcher 3 because of its art style?
Its stated art direction offers one reason it can feel different. Director Hidetaka Miyazaki described Elden Ring’s look as painterly high fantasy, intended to evoke a world that has passed through a Golden Age while leaving traces of it behind. He also discussed balancing more colorful moments with darker, intense situations.
That contrast gives color and brightness a particular role: beauty can suggest grandeur or remnants of an earlier era, while darkness can sharpen the sense of danger. By comparison, CD Projekt RED’s description of The Witcher 3 foregrounds distinct regional atmospheres and communities. One approach is not simply “more colorful” or “darker” in every scene; the useful distinction is what each developer says visual variety is meant to communicate.

As you play, consider whether a shift in color or lighting makes a place feel like a respite, a warning, or evidence of a world’s history. Those are reading strategies, not guaranteed reactions.

Camera perspective changes how scale, navigation, and intimacy can register. CD Projekt RED level-design staff have contrasted The Witcher 3’s third-person, horizontally oriented exploration with Cyberpunk 2077’s first-person, more vertically oriented spaces. That comparison is a design lens rather than proof that The Witcher 3 and Skyrim or Elden Ring use identical spatial design.

In a third-person view, the player character remains visible within the landscape, which can make the relationship between a figure and a broad vista easy to read. When comparing games, ask how the camera frames landmarks, routes, and nearby environmental details—and how that framing changes your sense of distance or presence. Perspective is only one part of readability; it works alongside terrain, architecture, lighting, and visual contrast.
How to compare the games without treating taste as a verdict
Try comparing a few concrete features while exploring, rather than asking which game has the “best” art style:
- Palette and lighting: What mood do color and brightness establish? In Elden Ring, Miyazaki explicitly describes contrast between more colorful moments and darker situations.
- Regional identity: Do places seem to have distinct atmospheres and communities? CD Projekt RED identifies this as an aim for The Witcher 3.
- Environmental storytelling: What might landmarks, architecture, landscape, or small details suggest about a place’s culture or history? The developer accounts for The Witcher 3 and Skyrim offer different ways into this question.
- Consistency and contrast: Does a game sustain a dominant mood, or deliberately move between different visual registers?
- Spatial readability: How do camera framing and the arrangement of the environment help you understand scale and possible routes?
These questions let you explain why a world appeals to you without turning a personal response into a universal ranking. A player drawn to varied regional moods may respond to The Witcher 3’s stated approach; someone interested in the visual foundations of a setting may pay close attention to Skyrim’s influences; and a player captivated by beauty set against darkness may connect with Elden Ring’s stated intent.
Which version of The Witcher 3 are you looking at?
Present-day screenshots and footage can show different editions, so identify the version when discussing how the game looks. CD Projekt RED announced that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered became available on September 29, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The studio says it includes visual, performance, gameplay, and other upgrades, and that it is free for existing owners. Those are the announced platforms and terms; check the official release information for edition details.
