Before updating Owlboy on desktop, quit the game and copy its entire Saves folder to a separate location. Keep the original folder in place, then confirm the updated game loads the progress you expect before removing your backup. The paths below are documented for desktop builds; they are not console instructions.
Find the Owlboy save folder on your platform
Owlboy’s documented desktop save locations differ by operating system. SteamDB lists the configured Linux and macOS paths; a D-Pad Studio support response in a Steam discussion gives the Windows path.

On Windows, replace <Username> with your Windows account name. You can also enter %USERPROFILE% in File Explorer’s address bar to open your profile folder, then navigate to Saved GamesOwlboySaves. Windows user-folder locations can be customized, so if that path is absent, check whether your profile folders have been redirected. D-Pad Studio support’s Steam discussion gives the Windows path and names save slots such as save1 through save4. SteamDB’s Owlboy Steam Cloud configuration listing shows a Windows *.sav pattern, so filenames or extensions can differ by build or configuration. Copy the folder, not a guessed selection of files.
On Linux, $XDG_DATA_HOME is an environment variable. If it is unset, the path shown may not resolve as written; the default location was not verified here. On macOS, the tilde (~) represents your home folder. These are desktop paths, not confirmed locations for console versions or every storefront.

Make a separate backup before updating
- Exit Owlboy completely. Close the game before copying files so the copy is not made while the game may be writing save data.
- Open the
Savesfolder for your platform using the path above. - Copy the complete
Savesfolder to another location. Do not move it or replace the original. A clearly named folder such asOwlboy Saves before updatemakes the copy easier to identify. - Choose how separate the copy should be. A second folder on the same computer is convenient, but it remains on the computer’s main storage. A separate physical drive, such as an optional USB flash drive, gives you a copy apart from that drive. The sources do not establish a need for a particular device or paid utility.
- Update and check the result. Launch Owlboy and verify that the expected progress appears. Keep the separate copy until you have confirmed the updated game loads it.
What Steam Cloud does—and what it does not guarantee
Owlboy’s Steam store listing includes Steam Cloud, and Steamworks describes configured cloud files syncing before and after sessions. That is synchronization between local and cloud copies, not a promise that Steam retains recoverable historical versions after a newer save has synced. If Steam presents a cloud conflict, stop before choosing either copy. Read the prompt to identify which version is local and which is in the cloud; the cited sources do not provide Owlboy-specific conflict-resolution directions.

Do Owlboy updates mean saves are at risk?
D-Pad Studio’s April 28, 2022 announcement described a Steam build moving to FNA and noted that an older XNA version was available on a beta branch. A May 2, 2022 follow-up discussed a startup-crash hotfix and pointed affected players to an older beta branch. Those are historical release notes, not evidence that a current update causes save corruption. The studio also published an older announcement about its save-backup system, but that does not replace the separate copy described above. The available path information is for desktop builds. It does not establish console save locations, compatibility between editions, or a guaranteed restore procedure for every storefront. If you need to restore a copy, preserve the original files and avoid overwriting a newer save until you have identified which copy contains the progress you want.
