Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance is an expansion in development for 2027, so its aerial and combat details remain preview information, not a finished manual. In the Tokyo Game Show hands-on report, the key aerial feature is using a Seikret to ride updrafts and glide between floating landmasses in Skybound Eyrie. A separate new mechanic, Boost Action, adds weapon-specific attacks and enhancements for a limited time. You can prepare with the base game’s established tools—weapon practice, Focus Mode, Focus Strikes, and Seikret repositioning—without assuming that older games’ aerial styles or unconfirmed controls apply here.
What is confirmed about aerial movement in Ascendance?
In the previewed Skybound Eyrie, the Seikret can catch updrafts, rise, and glide between floating landmasses. This is the aerial traversal described for that area in PlayStation.Blog Japan’s September 16, 2026 hands-on report. The report does not provide button-by-button instructions, traversal timing, airborne damage bonuses, or a general aerial-combo system, so none should be assumed.
Think of the Seikret’s updrafts as a way to navigate Skybound Eyrie’s terrain. The preview does not establish that this traversal works across every area or that gliding itself is an attack strategy.
How should a beginner prepare in Monster Hunter Wilds?
Practice one weapon before adding new mechanics
At Base Camp, use the Training Area and the in-game Play Guide’s Weapon Controls section to learn a weapon’s moves and combos. The official Monster Hunter Wilds game page describes 14 weapon types with different mobility, defense, and attack trade-offs. There is no universally best beginner weapon established by these sources; choose one whose controls and pace feel manageable.

These are broad distinctions, not a substitute for trying a weapon in the Training Area. The official Starter’s Guide recommends practicing there and consulting the weapon controls guidance.
Use Focus Mode to identify and line up targets
Focus Mode directs attacks and guards toward the camera-facing direction and makes wounds and exposed weak points easier to identify. When a wound or weak point is visible, a Focus Strike can exploit it. Focus Mode is a precision aid, not an always-on damage multiplier.

Before committing to a Focus Strike, face the target area with the camera and check that you have enough distance and a safe opening. Xbox Wire’s February 28, 2025 developer tips specifically caution that distance and alignment matter. If the monster is closing in or the angle is poor, keep attacking normally or reposition instead of forcing the strike.
Use the Seikret to recover, reposition, and adapt
The Seikret is more than a route between fights. Official beginner guidance recommends using it to create distance and recover health or stamina, or sharpen, while moving away from danger. It can also help with gathering and carry a second weapon.

A second weapon can suit a different monster or situation, or offer different properties. Choose and switch based on the opening or behavior you face rather than treating one weapon as the answer to every encounter. Mounted attacks are available, but the developer guidance says those actions are limited; for sustained offense, dismount and use your weapon on the ground.
How does the new Boost Action work?
In the Ascendance hands-on preview, Boost Action is activated with the Boost Bracer and lasts for a limited time. It grants weapon-specific attacks and empowers certain weapon actions. The gauge fills over time and through landed strikes. The preview says activation can happen mid-combo or after an attack leaves the hunter exposed, letting the new action carry offensive momentum into the next move.

The preview also describes a way to restore the draining gauge: while in Boost state, use a Focus Strike to destroy a wound. Timing that wound break near the end of Boost’s duration is a more advanced way to sustain the state. Treat it as an optional preview-derived tactic, not a required beginner combo; the report does not set out a complete weapon-by-weapon Boost guide.

Araketa: watch the tell, then target the opening
In the reported Skybound Eyrie demo, Araketa’s wing swell preceded a blast or charge, while its roar exposed a throat weak spot. The preview writer used a Focus Strike on that throat to interrupt Araketa’s commands to its pack. This illustrates why it can pay to observe an attack tell and line up a Focus Strike when a weak point appears; it is an encounter-specific demo example, not a guaranteed tactic for every quest or difficulty.

The same demo also used a curled-up Gundoraja creature as a thrown weapon to stagger Araketa. That is another reported encounter detail, not a general combat instruction.
Teostra: account for the opening and the terrain
In the Oilwell Basin preview, the writer countered Teostra’s foreleg slam with a Switch Axe Offset Rising Slash. The report also notes that thick oil mud interfered with dodging away from blast attacks in that demo. These examples show the value of recognizing an opening and noticing how terrain affects movement, but Offset timing is not a beginner requirement and the report does not establish a universal counter for Teostra.
Which combat choice should you make in the moment?
