Before buying a Limited Run Games (LRG) release secondhand, verify the exact game, platform, edition and included contents against LRG’s official release information. Then judge the specific listing: inspect photos of the actual copy, review the seller and transaction terms, and pay through a method whose protections apply. A marketplace’s ban on counterfeits is a rule—not proof that it authenticated a particular item.
1. Identify the exact release before comparing listings
Start with LRG’s official information page, which links to its shop, archive, Buying Guide and FAQs. Use the relevant product or archive information to confirm the title, console platform and edition you want. A game name alone is not enough: standard and Collector’s Editions can differ in packaging and extras, and a listing may omit components.
- Record the title and platform exactly as shown in the official release information.
- Identify the edition name, such as standard or Collector’s Edition.
- Note the expected contents for that edition, including the game, case, inserts and release-specific extras.
Do not assume that a seller’s use of “complete” means every original component is included. Compare the seller’s stated contents with the official description for that release.
2. Check whether the listing shows the item you will receive
Prefer clear photos of the actual copy over stock art. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises marketplace buyers to examine several photos, read the description carefully and ask questions in writing. For an LRG release, ask for views that let you assess the packaging, condition and included components.

- Request front and back photos, plus close-ups of seals, labels or visible damage.
- For an opened or used copy, ask for photos of the game and every component the seller claims is included.
- Ask directly about missing inserts, replaced packaging, damage or other differences from the official edition description.
- Keep the seller’s written answers and the listing details.
Photos and answers can help uncover discrepancies, but they cannot guarantee that a copy is genuine or complete.
3. Assess the seller, price and fulfillment terms
Review recent feedback and the seller’s history, not just the overall rating. Consider whether the account has relevant selling experience and whether the seller responds clearly to specific questions. If available, ask about the item’s provenance; treat an answer as supporting information, not definitive authentication.

Compare listings on more than price. The FTC cautions that an unusually low price for an expensive item can be a warning sign, though it does not prove fraud.

Read the seller’s terms and the marketplace’s refund, return and dispute rules before paying. Those terms—not LRG’s direct-order policy—govern an independent resale transaction.

4. Keep payment and communication on the marketplace
Use the marketplace’s supported checkout or another payment method only if its protections clearly apply to this purchase. Do not move payment off-platform for a discount: the FTC warns that doing so can cost you marketplace protection. Keep relevant communication on the platform so the listing, promises and transaction record are together.
On eBay, counterfeit goods and unauthorized copies of games are prohibited. Its policy says sellers should list an item only if they are certain it is genuine, and gives brand or authorized-distributor invoices as examples of authenticity documentation. That policy is a basis for evaluating or reporting a concern; it does not mean eBay independently inspected or authenticated every individual listing, nor does it guarantee a refund in every case.

5. Save evidence and act promptly if there is a problem
- Before checkout, save the listing, its photos and description, the seller’s answers, and the payment record.
- When the item arrives, promptly compare it with the listing: check the title, platform, edition, condition and promised contents.
- If something differs, document the discrepancy and contact the seller through the marketplace.
- Use the marketplace’s dispute or refund process within the deadline that applies to your transaction and payment method.
Return and refund windows vary, and some are short. Check the applicable rules before buying rather than assuming that a marketplace or payment provider gives every transaction the same recourse. FTC guidance is U.S. consumer advice; legal rights and remedies can differ by location.
Why an LRG release may appear in resale
LRG says its products are “bespoke and manufactured to demand.” Its FAQ explains that production begins after a preorder window closes and gives general estimates of within four months for standard-edition games and up to ten months for Collector’s Editions, depending on complexity. LRG says product and account pages carry specific estimates. These are general estimates for its direct-order production and shipping context, not a delivery promise for a resale purchase. Resale availability, price and condition depend on the particular listing.

LRG’s FAQ also says direct-order return or exchange requests may be made within 30 days of delivery, subject to case-by-case review, and that items with an emailed digital key cannot be returned. Those terms concern purchases from LRG; they do not replace the seller’s and marketplace’s rules for a secondhand transaction.
