A black screen makes the installation a reasonable suspect, but does not prove the chip itself is defective. Do not use another chip’s wiring diagram or attempt delicate solder rework unless you have the experience to identify the correct board points.
First, identify what “fails to boot” means
Before opening the console, record its behavior. This helps distinguish a no-display or stalled-boot problem from a console that starts normally but has trouble reading a disc.
- Does the standby light work, and does the console power on?
- Does the fan or disc mechanism start?
- Is the display black from power-on, or does the normal PlayStation boot screen appear?
- Does the console reach the browser, show an error screen, or reject only certain discs?
A black screen with no normal boot display is not the same symptom as a red disc-format error or a game that will not read. Rockstar’s disc-read and graphics troubleshooting covers cases such as trying to start without a disc and testing other discs, but it does not diagnose a console that cannot reach its normal boot display after a modchip installation: Rockstar Support: disc-read or graphics issues. Confirm the exact console, board, chip, and installation guide
Before interpreting any wire or solder point, identify the PS2 model, motherboard revision, modchip model, and the installation diagram used. Point labels and routing instructions are not universal. A connection called out in a DMS4 guide cannot safely be assumed to apply to a different chip or board.

The most direct black-screen checks available are in the DMS4 SE PS2 Mod Install Guide V12–V14. Its instructions apply to the specified DMS4 installation and supported revisions, not to PS2 modchips generally.
Inspect only against the matching installation documentation
If you can confidently identify the exact board and chip instructions, visually compare the work with that guide before making changes. For its DMS4 V12–V14 installation, the guide calls out checking the specified power and ground wires, making sure wires lie flat against the motherboard, and looking for solder bridges between neighboring pins or pads. These are documented checks for that installation, not a universal list of PS2 test points.

- Do not move a wire based on a diagram for a different motherboard revision or chip.
- Do not scrape traces, bridge points, or probe unidentified pads based on generic online advice.
- If the diagram or board revision is uncertain, stop rather than guessing.
Consider board damage if the screen remains black
A failed boot may involve damage to the motherboard as well as a wiring or soldering problem. An older PS2 repair reference lists a blown surface-mount fuse and damage around BIOS solder points as possible causes, but it does not identify which fuse or trace is faulty on a particular board: PS2 repair guide. Treat those as possibilities for board-level diagnosis, not as instructions to replace a fuse or repair a trace without revision-specific evidence.

The DMS4 guide suggests removing the chip to check whether the console is otherwise functional, or re-soldering if the problem persists. Those are advanced repair steps, not safe generic instructions for an inexperienced owner. PCSX2 describes modchip use as high risk and suitable only for experienced solderers; its guidance concerns BIOS dumping rather than servicing a PS2 motherboard: PCSX2 BIOS guide. If you cannot confidently identify the correct points or recognize possible solder damage, stop and seek board-level repair help.
