Let the download and installation finish before disconnecting. This updates the installed game software; it does not update the cartridge itself.
Download the game update while you’re online
- Connect your Nintendo Switch 2 to the internet.
- On the HOME Menu, highlight the icon for the game card’s software. Do not launch the game.
- Press the + or − button on the controller.
- Select Software Update, then Via the Internet.
- Wait for the download and installation to complete before going offline.
Nintendo Support says the console will prompt you to download an available software update when you start a game or application while connected online. You can also enable automatic software updates for installed software, but that option still requires an internet connection. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 software update instructions.
Which update route can you use?

Use local wireless if you cannot get online
Nintendo also documents Match Version with Local Users, which shares compatible update data over local wireless. The participating consoles must have the latest system update. Players select the same software, create or join a local group, and the group creator starts the session; participants are then brought up to the most recent software version available in that group. Follow Nintendo’s local-user update instructions for the on-screen steps.
This is version matching with another prepared console, not a way to download update data from Nintendo’s servers without internet. If no suitable console nearby has the version you need, use the internet update route before you leave connectivity.

Check whether you have a game card or a game-key card
A regular game card is different from a game-key card. A game-key card does not contain the full game: Nintendo says you must download the game data over the internet before playing, and an internet connection is required for the first launch. Later launches can be made offline with the game-key card inserted. That full-game download requirement is separate from downloading an update for software already installed from a regular game card. If the download cannot complete because storage is full
Additional storage is only relevant if the console does not have enough free space. Nintendo identifies system memory and a microSD Express card as possible locations for game-key-card download data; Switch 2 requires the microSD Express format for microSD cards. Check Nintendo’s Switch 2 system update history and support information for the current system context, and confirm a card’s compatibility and capacity before buying one. Storage expansion is not a required step in the ordinary game update procedure.

What to check before you go offline
- Confirm the update download and installation have finished.
- Start the game once while connected if you want to verify that it opens as expected.
- Do not assume every title will work fully offline: online multiplayer, cloud features, first-launch checks, or other title-specific requirements may still need connectivity.
