You can play some Nintendo Switch 2 games offline, but not every game or feature works without a connection. Before you leave, download and update the games you want, load each digital game’s virtual game card onto the console you’re taking, and test your games with Wi-Fi off. Game-key cards and cloud-version games have different requirements, so check those before departure.
Make the console travel-ready before you leave
- Connect to the internet and update. Install any available system update and update the games you plan to play. Download the games, DLC, and other content you’ll need. Nintendo’s System Settings overview covers internet, Airplane Mode, and data-management settings.
- Load digital games onto the travel console. Nintendo says a game or DLC can be played offline when its virtual game card is loaded on that console. Arrange this before you travel: swapping virtual game cards between linked consoles requires an internet connection. See Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card Guide.
- Prepare game-key cards. A game-key card does not contain the full game. Download its game data and launch the game online once before leaving. Afterward, you can start it offline with the game-key card inserted. Nintendo explains the requirements in its Game-Key Card Overview.
- Launch and test each game. On the console you’re taking, turn off Wi-Fi or enable Airplane Mode, then start each game. This is a useful check, not a guarantee that every mode or future session will work offline. Check the publisher’s support information for online checks, multiplayer, and required services.
- Finish any console transfer early. A system transfer requires an internet connection, and downloaded games must be downloaded again on the target console. Complete the transfer and downloads before departure; see Nintendo’s Transfer Guide.
Know which games can work offline
Offline access depends on the game’s format, how its digital license is set up on your console, and the game’s own requirements. Use this comparison to plan what to install and test:
| Game or feature | What to do before travel | Offline expectation |
|---|---|---|
| Digital purchase with its virtual game card loaded | Load the card onto the console you’re taking. | Nintendo says the game or DLC can be played without an internet connection while its virtual game card is loaded on that console. |
| Digital purchase using Online License without a loaded virtual game card | Do not rely on this setup for a no-internet trip. | Nintendo describes Online License play as requiring the console to be connected to the internet. |
| Regular physical game card | Bring the card and check the specific game’s update, DLC, and mode requirements. | Physical format alone does not establish that every game feature works offline. |
| Game-key card | Download the game and complete its first launch online; bring the card. | It can start offline after that first launch, but the card must be inserted. |
| Cloud-version game | Choose another game for an offline trip. | It streams over a stable, high-speed internet connection and is not an offline option. |
| Save Data Cloud | Back up or retrieve saves while connected if needed. | Cloud save backup and retrieval require connectivity and a Nintendo Switch Online membership; this is separate from whether a game itself can be played offline. |
Nintendo’s Online License instructions explain the setting’s connected-play role. Requirements can also differ by game mode, so test the specific titles you plan to use.
Turn on Airplane Mode
Airplane Mode can disable wireless communication when you don’t need it. Nintendo says it can be enabled in handheld or tabletop mode, but not in TV mode.

Nintendo lists 256 GB of console storage, with some reserved for system use. If you need more room for downloaded games, updates, or DLC, Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. The card is sold separately, and the first time you use one, the console needs an internet connection for a system update. Nintendo’s compatibility information and microSD Express FAQ have the details.
