The most efficient general approach is to make each outing advance more than one skill: gather resources in the highest-level region you can safely handle, then process those materials into artisan XP. Check the skill tree for useful unlocks before choosing a target, and let on-foot travel build Agility when practical. There is no established fastest skill order or verified XP-per-hour route for every player.
How skill XP and unlocks work
Skills gain XP through their associated actions: chopping trees, for example, trains Woodcutting, while building bases, structures, and furnishings trains Construction. Skill levels can unlock abilities, spells, traits, or buffs. Jagex’s Skills and the Skill Tree guide explains these mechanics and the in-game interface.
- Press K to open the Skills menu.
- Select a skill to see how much XP is needed for its next level.
- Open that skill’s tree and check what the relevant milestone unlocks.
- Choose a target level because it gives you something useful, rather than pursuing a level number without a goal.
The official help page explains how to check progress and unlocks; it does not provide a complete skill-by-skill leveling route or XP-rate table.
Use a gathering-to-crafting progression loop
Before setting out to gather, think about which skills can use the materials you collect. A general strategy in AllThings.How’s guide, updated September 26, 2026, is to gather in the highest region you can survive in, then put those resources to work through activities such as smelting, crafting, or cooking. This lets one expedition contribute to both gathering and artisan skills instead of leaving materials unused.

- Choose a manageable region: Higher-level areas are only useful if you can survive and gather there reliably.
- Have a processing goal: Decide which collected materials you intend to smelt, craft, or cook, based on recipes and skills currently available to you.
- Adapt to your unlocks: The best region and recipe depend on your character’s current progress. The cited guide offers general advice, not a verified universal route or measured XP rates.
Let travel build Agility
A September 2026 guide says that running on foot awards Agility XP. When it suits the trip, travel between tasks on foot rather than treating movement as time with no skill progress. The same guide recommends completing each newly unlocked course once for its milestone reward, then repeating a course available to you. Course names and thresholds can change with updates, so check what is available in your current game rather than relying on an older route.
Set priorities around what you want to do
There is no source-supported skill order that is optimal for everyone. The September 2026 skills progression guide describes different priorities for quest progress, long-term base building, and using magic. Pick the goal that matters to your character and check the skill tree for the unlocks that support it.

Plan for dependencies as well as headline unlocks. The guide notes that concentrating too narrowly can create resource bottlenecks: magic requires rune supplies, while food progression can involve farming and cooking together. A route that advances a desired skill but leaves you short of the resources it needs may stall overall progress.
For magic, account for runes
Jagex’s Using Magic guide says magic becomes available after the tutorial spellbook or when you unlock a first spell through a skill, and that spells require runes. If magic is your priority, consider how you will obtain rune supplies alongside the skill unlock. The guide explains the dependency but does not give an efficient Runecrafting route.

How much XP does level 99 take?
AllThings.How reports that level 99 takes 1,000,000 total XP per skill and that levels 93–99 require 657,432 XP. These are figures attributed to that secondary guide, not a complete XP curve published by Jagex; the official skills help confirms level 99 as the maximum but does not publish the full curve. Treat 99 as a substantial long-term target, not an assumed near-term efficiency goal.

Jagex’s June 23, 2026 Umbral Sands announcement described the update as the final major Steam Early Access update before a planned September 15, 2026 version 1.0 launch across PC and consoles. That announcement is release context, not a current patch log. Skills, courses, and routes can change; verify what is available in your live game before following a specific plan.

In particular, Jagex’s May 15, 2026 roadmap update described Agility traversal challenges and said Prayer was moving to a winter update. Those were dated plans, not confirmation of later availability. A September 2026 guide said Prayer was not yet in the game at the time it was written, so check the live game for its current status.
