TinyTendo is a handheld NES built around modified original Nintendo chips—not an emulator, Raspberry Pi, NOAC, or FPGA. Hackaday’s 2023 coverage describes a Game Boy-sized design with a compact custom board, color LCD, USB-C charging, and support for mini-cartridges. Some practical details, including battery life and confirmed full-size cartridge compatibility, remain unestablished.
What makes TinyTendo a real-hardware NES?
TinyTendo project creator Redherring32 described it as “a real hardware NES handheld” and said: “This is not emulation, it is not a Pi, it is not a NOAC, and it is not an FPGA. This is real NES hardware from a real NES.” Hackaday quoted those words from a May 24, 2022 project post in its June 2023 coverage.
The distinction is about what produces the NES behavior: the project uses original Nintendo chips rather than software emulation or a replacement NES-on-a-chip. Those chips are modified to take up less space and mounted on a custom compact motherboard. Hackaday describes that board as smaller than a Raspberry Pi 3.
How was the hardware miniaturized?
The 2023 report says TinyTendo’s original Nintendo DIP chips were machined down toward QFN-style surface-mount packages. This is an unusual way to shrink hardware designed for larger through-hole packages, and it is central to fitting the circuitry into a handheld form.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
It builds on Redherring32’s earlier chip work. In a March 2021 Hackaday report, the creator reduced the package of an NES RP2A03, exposed its lead-frame connections, and used fine magnet wire. Hackaday attributed an approximately 93% footprint reduction to that modified RP2A03 proof of concept. That figure applies to the chip experiment, not to TinyTendo’s overall size or the complete handheld.
What features and game media are reported?
Hackaday’s 2023 account describes a custom case, a bright color LCD, and USB-C charging. TinyTendo is designed for mini-cartridges created by Bucket Mouse. The report says full-size NES cartridges might work with a simple adapter, but does not establish that such an adapter was tested or that full-size cartridges are compatible.

| Game media | Designed for Bucket Mouse mini-cartridges. Full-size cartridges with an adapter are a reported possibility, not verified compatibility. |
| Display and charging | Bright color LCD and USB-C charging are reported; screen size and battery capacity are not stated (Hackaday, 2023). |
| Portability figures | Described as about the size of the original Game Boy. Exact dimensions and weight are not stated (Hackaday, 2023). |
| Battery life and controls | Runtime and control specifications are not stated (Hackaday, 2023). |
Is TinyTendo available to buy or build?
The available coverage does not establish that TinyTendo, its mini-cartridges, or a full-size cartridge adapter are currently for sale. Hackaday quoted a May 2022 statement that the project would be open sourced “in a few weeks,” but that forecast is not confirmation that build files were later published. The 2021 and 2023 reports do not verify current release status, a complete bill of materials, or a finished-device listing.
That leaves an important practical gap: the concept is described clearly enough to understand its hardware approach, but the cited coverage does not provide the complete parts list, build files, or tested cartridge-adapter details needed to treat it as a confirmed ready-to-build or ready-to-buy handheld.

How does TinyTendo compare with other ways to play NES games?
TinyTendo’s defining difference is its reported use of original NES chips in a handheld. By contrast, emulation-based or FPGA-based options use different approaches to reproducing NES behavior. The reporting does not supply enough detail to compare TinyTendo’s screen, controls, runtime, game compatibility, or availability against specific alternatives, so it cannot support a broader claim that it is the best or most practical portable NES.
For a player choosing a device, the unresolved questions are consequential: whether the desired cartridges work, how long it runs between charges, what the controls and display are like, and whether the project can be built or purchased today. The published description answers only part of that checklist.
