The XMG APEX 15 MAX E22 is the gaming laptop that XMG announced with support for AMD’s desktop Ryzen 7 5800X3D. It is an unusual desktop-replacement design: a B550 motherboard with a socketed desktop AM4 processor, rather than a thin laptop using a mobile Ryzen chip. XMG called it the first notebook to support AMD 3D V-Cache.
What laptop has a Ryzen 7 5800X3D?
It is the XMG APEX 15 MAX E22. In an announcement dated October 4, 2022, XMG said BIOS 1.07.09A01, incorporating AGESA 1.2.0.7, enabled the machine to be configured with the Ryzen 7 5800X3D or to receive the processor as an upgrade. The CPU sits in a desktop AM4 socket on the laptop’s B550 motherboard. XMG’s announcement described it as the first notebook supporting AMD 3D V-Cache; that “first” designation is XMG’s claim.
This is not the XMG APEX 15 M21. XMG’s specifications for that separate model list mobile Ryzen 7 5800H and Ryzen 9 5900HX processors, not the desktop 5800X3D. The model name alone is not enough to establish CPU compatibility. XMG’s APEX 15 M21 specifications distinguish the generations.
Why can this laptop use a desktop CPU?
The E22 is built around a desktop platform: its B550 board has a socketed AM4 CPU, and XMG’s BIOS update added support for the 5800X3D. That combination is what makes this upgrade possible. Most laptops use processors integrated into a mobile platform and do not offer this kind of desktop socket or CPU swap. Compatibility for the APEX 15 MAX E22 does not imply that a 5800X3D can be installed in an ordinary laptop or another APEX model.

How did the Ryzen 7 5800X3D perform in XMG’s tests?
XMG tested an APEX 15 MAX with a GeForce RTX 3070 and 64 GB (2×32 GB) of DDR4-3200 memory. In Shadow of the Tomb Raider at the High preset, XMG reported a result of 152 for the 5800X3D versus 117 for the Ryzen 7 5700X, describing the 5800X3D as about 30% ahead. The published table does not specify the unit for those results, so they should be read as XMG’s reported figures rather than a universal performance measure. XMG’s announcement contains the benchmark context.
The 5800X3D did not lead XMG’s listed CineBench results. XMG said processors from the 5800X upward ran in AMD ECO Mode, with up to 88 W PPT in this laptop. These are XMG benchmarks, not independent lab results.

| CPU | CineBench R20 single | CineBench R20 multi | CineBench R23 multi |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ryzen 7 5700X | 584 | 4757 | 12061 |

| Ryzen 9 5900X | 583 | 6350 | 15697 |
Those results point to a workload-dependent trade-off: XMG’s game test favored the 5800X3D over the 5700X, while the 5900X led the two listed multi-core rendering tests. AMD separately said the 5800X3D delivered “up to 15% more gaming performance” compared with processors without stacked cache technology. That is AMD’s claim about its own comparisons, not a measurement of the APEX 15 MAX. AMD’s March 2022 announcement gives that claim and the processor’s launch context.
Was the APEX 15 MAX a desktop replacement?
Yes, in the sense that it put desktop-class components and a socketed desktop CPU in a portable-computer chassis; “desktop replacement” does not mean it had the same size or upgrade flexibility as a conventional desktop tower. HotHardware described the machine as weighing 2.6 kg and measuring 361 × 258 × 32.5 mm. Those are secondary-source figures, not definitive E22 specifications. HotHardware’s coverage reports them.

XMG’s historical base configuration included a Ryzen 5 5600X, GeForce RTX 3060, 16 GB (2×8 GB) DDR4-3200, a 500 GB Samsung 980 SSD and a 240 Hz Full HD IPS display. At the October 2022 announcement, XMG listed that configuration from €1,379 including 19% VAT, with a €342 5800X3D upgrade. A €300 discount advertised through October 11, 2022, reduced the stated starting price to €1,079. These are announcement-era prices, not current pricing or evidence of present availability. What should a buyer or owner take away?
- For an E22 owner: the 5800X3D was a supported configuration or upgrade with XMG’s BIOS 1.07.09A01. Confirm the exact laptop model and current support procedure with XMG before changing hardware.
- For a gaming-focused workload: XMG’s single game comparison favored the 5800X3D over the 5700X, but it is one vendor test on an RTX 3070 configuration, not a guarantee for every game or setting.
- For CPU rendering: XMG’s published CineBench figures show the 5900X ahead in multi-core results, so the 5800X3D should not be treated as the automatic best choice for every workload.
- For anyone considering a different laptop: check its exact motherboard, socket and supported BIOS. The E22’s upgrade path is specific to this desktop-socket design.
