A Nintendo Switch download card gives you a 16-digit code to redeem; it is not a game card you insert to play. Redeeming the code downloads the game to your console. A physical game card, by contrast, is inserted into the console. Nintendo says the game content is the same in physical and digital versions—the practical differences are how you get, store, switch between, and share access to it.
What comes in each format?
Physical game card
You receive a removable game card. Insert it into the Switch you want to play on. Some physical games still require an additional download, so check the packaging for storage notices. Nintendo’s Data Management FAQ explains that some games need extra data or storage.
Download card or code
You receive a printed 16-digit code. On the console, open Nintendo eShop, select “Redeem Code,” enter the code, and download the game. You need an internet connection to redeem and download it, as well as enough console storage for the title. A direct eShop purchase does not require a separate retailer download card: the purchase is delivered to the linked console. See Nintendo’s digital-games information for code redemption and digital-game details.
Which differences matter in everyday use?
| What to compare | Physical game card | Download code or digital purchase |
|---|---|---|
| How you start playing | Insert the card; some games also need a download. | Redeem or purchase the game, then download it before playing. |
| Changing games | Swap the card when you want to play a different card-based game. | Launch downloaded games without swapping cards. |
| Moving between consoles | Insert the card in the console you want to use. | Access is governed by the purchasing Nintendo Account and Nintendo’s current console and virtual-game-card rules. |
| Storage | Some titles need extra downloaded data, so a card does not guarantee zero storage use. | The game is downloaded to console storage; required space varies by title and updates can increase it. |
| Where progress is saved | Save data is stored in system memory, not on the game card. | Save data is likewise stored in system memory, not in the downloaded game. |
Nintendo’s official comparison says, “The game content is the same no matter whether you buy the physical or digital version.” Check the specific product listing for edition differences, bonuses, downloadable content, or platform versions; format parity does not mean every product listing includes identical extras.

Does save data stay with the card or code?
No. Nintendo says save data is stored in system memory and, for the most part, associated with the individual user. With the same user selected, progress is not affected by whether the game is played from a card or downloaded from eShop. Moving progress to another console is a separate matter handled through Nintendo’s transfer or cloud-save options where supported; the multi-console support guide covers console and save-data context.
Do physical Switch games still need downloads or extra storage?
Sometimes. A physical release may include only part of the game on the card, or require extra data to be downloaded before or during play. Nintendo says extra-storage requirements apply to physical and digital versions alike, and the exact requirement varies by title. Check the package notice or the specific eShop listing rather than assuming “physical” means no download.

Digital game sizes vary and can grow with updates. Nintendo says you can delete or archive digital games to free space and redownload them later; removing a digital game does not remove its save data from the console. A compatible microSD card can expand storage, but confirm the card type supported by your console: Switch 2 accepts microSD Express cards only, according to Nintendo’s UK guidance.
Can you share a game with another Switch?
A physical card can be moved to another console and inserted there. Digital access is different: it is tied to the Nintendo Account that bought the game and depends on Nintendo’s current console settings, online-license options, and virtual-game-card rules. Nintendo also describes lending digital games to members of a Nintendo Account family group through virtual game cards. These account rules are not the same as handing someone a transferable code after redemption; consult Nintendo’s current multi-console instructions for your household’s setup.

What about Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key Cards?
Game-Key Cards are a separate Switch 2 format, not ordinary original-Switch game cards and not boxed download codes. In Nintendo’s 2025 Annual General Meeting Q&A, company president Shuntaro Furukawa said a Game-Key Card stores a key to activate the software rather than the full game data. The first download requires an internet connection; later play does not require internet, but the card must be inserted. This explanation applies to Switch 2 Game-Key Cards, not to every boxed game or original Nintendo Switch physical release. Nintendo’s Q&A, question 16, provides the official clarification.
