You can adjust its screen framing and controls, or use the separate native PC port for modern graphics options—but those controls do not turn gameplay into third person.
Can you play GoldenEye 007 in third person?
Not in the original N64 release. Its instruction manual describes the game as first-person and lists no third-person gameplay camera setting. If you saw Bond from behind during gameplay, identify the specific mod, port, or other version: settings and features can differ between implementations.
The current native PC port is a separate, versioned project. Its documentation mentions Bond’s third-person model positioning in cutscenes, but that is not evidence of a third-person gameplay mode.
Best graphics settings for the original N64 game
The N64 manual documents two display options. Choose based on your television and whether you prefer the game’s original-looking framing or a widescreen presentation; the manual does not designate one choice as best for every display or emulation setup.

These are documented in-game options, not a guarantee that every emulator or modern display will reproduce the same image. If the picture looks stretched or cropped, try another screen mode or ratio rather than assuming the game has a camera problem.
Best graphics settings for the native PC port
The project README for goldeneye-pc-port v0.4.0, released September 28, 2026, lists native widescreen support, field of view (FOV), MSAA, filtering, resolution, and other video controls. On a widescreen display, native widescreen is a sensible starting point; then adjust FOV, resolution, anti-aliasing, and filtering to suit your display and preference. The documentation does not establish a universally optimal preset or a tested best configuration.

Steam Deck users have a documented starting point: the port seeds first-launch Game Mode defaults of 1280×800 fullscreen, VSync, 2× MSAA, and 250% draw/LOD distance. These are the project’s Deck defaults, not independent performance-test results or settings for original N64 hardware. If the defaults do not appear, an existing configuration file may be overriding the first-launch preset.
Camera feel and controls: choose an input layout
A control layout can make looking and movement feel more natural, but it does not change the camera from first person to third person. The original game offers multiple controller schemes, including two-controller styles that use two sticks for separate movement and looking axes. The control reference at The GoldenEye Depot describes eight schemes; it is an unofficial fan reference.

The PC port supports a modern dual-stick controller layout. Choose that if you prefer one stick for movement and another for looking. Treat it as an input preference rather than a camera-mode setting.

What to know before using the PC port
The project README identifies the port as pre-1.0 and says players must supply a compatible ROM; for v0.4.0, it identifies NTSC-U compatibility. Consult the project README for current requirements and release-specific details, since the port’s documentation may change after updates.
