A dedicated GPU is usually better for demanding games, higher resolutions, and higher graphics settings. Integrated graphics can run some games and are often a better fit for lightweight gaming when efficiency, portability, or cost matters more. The right choice depends on the exact GPU and CPU, the games you play, and your target settings—not just whether a GPU is integrated or dedicated.
How the two GPU types differ
An integrated GPU is built into the processor or platform and shares resources with the rest of the system. A dedicated, or discrete, GPU is a separate graphics processor designed for heavier graphics workloads. Microsoft Support describes integrated GPUs as normally less powerful but more power-efficient than discrete GPUs, which are better suited to demanding tasks such as gaming. Microsoft’s GPU overview also notes that integrated graphics can handle some gaming.
| Factor | Integrated graphics | Dedicated graphics |
|---|---|---|
| Gaming | Can run some games; suitability depends on the particular GPU and game requirements. | Generally better suited to graphics-heavy gaming. |
| Memory | Uses some system memory; allocation depends on the system. | Has dedicated video memory on the graphics card. |
| Power and portability | Usually more power-efficient and can support thinner, lighter laptops. | Uses more power; a laptop may switch between it and integrated graphics. |
| Cost | Normally the less expensive graphics option. | Normally adds cost; compare the complete computer, not just GPU categories. |
| Upgradeability | Part of the system, with performance tied to the processor and platform. | Can be added to many desktops if compatible; laptop upgrades are generally limited. |
Can integrated graphics run games?
Yes. Some integrated GPUs can play games, but there is no reliable rule based on the integrated label alone. Performance depends on the specific processor and graphics configuration, the game, resolution, and graphics settings. Check the developer’s published system requirements and look for benchmarks for the exact hardware and game you intend to use; Intel recommends comparing both the laptop CPU and GPU with game requirements. Intel’s gaming laptop guide explains why those details matter.
Integrated graphics are most attractive if you play less demanding titles or prioritize battery life, portability, and a lower-cost computer. For newer or graphics-intensive games, a dedicated GPU is generally the safer choice, but it is not a guarantee that every game will run well at every setting.

Shared system memory is not the same as VRAM
Integrated graphics use system memory rather than memory on a separate graphics card. AMD describes this arrangement as Unified Memory Architecture: graphics share a portion of system RAM. AMD’s desktop guidance for UMA recommends leaving the frame-buffer setting on Auto for most workloads; manually increasing it may help in some cases, but can affect system performance when RAM is limited. Those instructions apply to AMD desktop systems with integrated graphics, not universally to every PC.
Intel likewise says its integrated GPU has no dedicated memory and uses shared memory allocated automatically, with behavior varying by system. BIOS controls are not available on all machines. Intel’s memory guidance was last reviewed on May 23, 2025. A “dedicated video memory” figure shown by a system utility does not, by itself, prove that an integrated GPU has physical VRAM on a separate card.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
For a discrete GPU, the card has its own video memory. How much is sufficient depends on the game, resolution, and settings. Intel notes that higher resolutions such as 1440p or 4K at high settings need sufficient VRAM for smooth play. It also states that 4K displays four times as many pixels as 1080p; that is a pixel-count relationship, not a claim that gaming performance changes by a particular percentage.
How to choose for your games
- List the games you actually play. Check each developer’s current minimum and recommended system requirements.
- Set a realistic target. Decide the resolution and graphics settings you want. Higher resolutions and settings increase the graphics workload and can raise VRAM needs.
- Compare the exact hardware. Check the specific GPU and CPU in the computer—not simply “integrated” or “dedicated”—against the game requirements.
- Look for comparable benchmarks. Prefer results for the same GPU configuration, game, resolution, settings, and system class. A GPU category alone cannot establish a frame-rate expectation.
- Weigh efficiency against graphics performance. If battery life and a compact laptop matter most, integrated graphics may be the better compromise. If demanding games or higher settings are the priority, favor a suitable dedicated GPU.
GPU names alone do not promise equivalent performance across different computers. For a specific buying decision, the exact configuration and comparable game benchmarks are more useful than a general integrated-versus-dedicated rule.

What changes on laptops and desktops?
Laptops can include both GPUs
A Windows laptop may have integrated graphics for lighter tasks and a discrete GPU for heavier work. The system can switch between them to balance performance and power efficiency, as Microsoft Support explains. The discrete GPU’s higher power use is an important trade-off if you value battery life and portability.
Desktop upgrades depend on compatibility
A desktop with integrated graphics can often accept a dedicated graphics card, subject to system compatibility. Intel says the usual behavior is for onboard graphics to turn off, replacing the processor’s GPU rather than adding its performance. Some systems can enable both in BIOS. Confirm the graphics card, case, motherboard, and power supply are compatible before buying. Intel’s support article on adding a dedicated GPU was last reviewed September 5, 2024.

Laptop GPU upgrades are generally not practical
Intel says adding a dedicated graphics card to a laptop is generally not possible because of technical limitations. Choose a laptop with the graphics configuration you need rather than assuming it can be upgraded later.

Choose a dedicated GPU when your games, resolution, or graphics settings demand more graphics capability. Integrated graphics can be enough for some games and make sense when efficiency, portability, or cost takes priority. Decide from the exact system requirements and comparable benchmarks for the hardware you are considering; the available official guidance describes broad trade-offs, not a universal frame-rate advantage for every dedicated GPU over every integrated one.
