Start with render resolution or render scale, then test shadows, reflections, and lighting effects if you need more performance. Those settings can change GPU workload substantially, but their cost and visual benefit depend on the game. The best approach is to tune toward your frame-rate target, changing one option at a time and checking the result in a repeatable scene.
Which settings are worth adjusting first?
Prioritize settings that either change the number of pixels rendered or add expensive effects. A setting that looks dramatic in one game may have little impact in another, so treat this order as a starting point rather than a universal ranking.
Render resolution and render scale
These are direct image-quality and workload controls. Rendering above 100% scale can sharpen the image but costs performance; rendering below 100% can improve performance at the expense of clarity. If the GPU is struggling, try a modest reduction and judge the result on your display at its normal viewing size.
Shadows
Higher shadow settings may produce smoother or more accurate shadows, but the techniques and cost vary. Intel recommends testing medium or low shadows in fast-paced games, where the visual difference may be less noticeable during play. Intel’s frame-rate guide also suggests sacrificing reflection quality when it is not important to the scene.

Reflections
Dynamic reflections can require the game to render the scene again, or render a version of it, so reducing their quality may help in games that use them heavily. Ray-traced reflections can show off-screen objects accurately, but their value and performance cost are game-specific. NVIDIA’s Control graphics and performance guide illustrates the trade-off in that particular game; its measurements are not a general benchmark for other games or PCs.
Lighting and ambient occlusion
Volumetric lighting creates effects such as visible light shafts and can be costly. Ambient occlusion adds approximate contact shading in corners and where surfaces meet, often making scenes feel more grounded. Its appearance and cost depend on the implementation. Intel’s developer guide estimates screen-space ambient occlusion at typically 5–10% of frame GPU time in many modern game engines; that is an engine-level estimate, not a prediction for a specific game. How should you balance image quality and FPS?
Decide what matters for the game you are playing: visual fidelity, smoothness, or responsiveness. Then compare the available options at your intended output resolution and in motion—not just in a screenshot. AMD’s support guidance sums up the trade-off: “Since higher visual quality may impact performance, achieving an optimal gaming experience requires balancing visual quality and performance.” AMD’s Radeon gaming settings guide discusses that balance.
Anti-aliasing
Anti-aliasing reduces jagged edges, but methods differ in sharpness and performance cost. Supersampling can be expensive; if performance is limited, try a lower sample rate or a less GPU-intensive method where the game offers one. Compare edges and fine detail in motion as well as in a still scene, since temporal artifacts or softness may become more obvious during play.

Upscaling
DLSS, FSR, and XeSS, where supported by the game, render internally at a lower resolution and reconstruct an image for the selected output resolution. Their modes offer different quality/performance balances. Intel’s XeSS guide describes Ultra Quality, Quality, Balanced, and Performance modes, but image quality depends on the game, implementation, output resolution, and supported hardware. Compare image stability and detail in your actual game before settling on a mode. Intel’s XeSS guide explains the modes.
Texture filtering and tessellation
Anisotropic filtering can make textures viewed at an angle—such as a road stretching into the distance—look clearer. AMD describes its performance cost as small, and its guidance also characterizes texture-filtering quality as relatively low impact. Tessellation adds geometric detail; limiting it may improve FPS in games that use it heavily.

How to tune settings without guessing
- Choose a target. Set the resolution and frame rate you want for the game and your display.
- Establish a baseline. Start from the game’s default settings or a reasonable preset, then use a built-in benchmark or a repeatable gameplay scene.
- Change one setting at a time. If performance is short, test render scale, shadows, reflections, and lighting first. This makes it easier to identify which change helped.
- Measure the same scene again. Record average FPS and, if available, frame-time or percentile measurements. AMD’s Game Advisor reports average FPS and 95th-percentile frame timing, and can recommend changes to resolution, render scale, anti-aliasing, ambient occlusion, and presets. AMD’s Game Advisor information describes its recommendations.
- Keep the changes that suit you. If performance has headroom, use it on visual options you value. Texture filtering is often worth keeping if it improves clarity at little cost on your system; use an upscaler only if its output looks acceptable at your chosen resolution.
Why there is no universal best preset
Settings behave differently across games, rendering techniques, hardware, and scenes. A result from one title is useful as an example of how to test, not as a promise about your own frame rate. For instance, NVIDIA’s Control guide reports specific changes for its tested locations and settings, including SSAO measurements; those results belong to Control and its test context. Likewise, Intel’s 5–10% SSAO figure describes typical engine-level GPU time in many modern engines, not a guaranteed cost in a particular title.
If careful tuning still cannot deliver the resolution or frame rate you want, a faster GPU is one possible next step; Intel notes that it can help with higher-resolution rendering. It is not a prerequisite for improving the balance of settings on a PC you already own.
