For modern PC gaming, 8 GB of VRAM can work at 1080p with suitable settings; 12 GB is a sensible planning target for demanding 1440p play; and 16 GB or more can provide extra room for 4K or higher texture settings. These are guidelines, not guarantees: requirements vary by game, and VRAM capacity alone does not determine performance.
What VRAM does—and what it does not do
VRAM is the graphics card’s onboard memory. It stores assets the GPU needs to render a game, including textures and shaders. AMD describes it as fast onboard memory used for rendering games and applications, but the amount a game needs depends on its assets and the settings used to display them.
More VRAM does not make a graphics card’s processor faster. A card with ample memory can still struggle to render at a high resolution or frame rate; compare the GPU’s overall performance as well as its memory capacity.
How much VRAM to target by resolution

These are buying guidelines, not a cross-game benchmark or a promise that a particular card will run every game at a given setting. Resolution is only one factor; texture quality, ray tracing, desired frame rate, and upscaling can also affect the hardware needed.

Why game requirements vary
Requirements are tied to a target profile
Publishers often connect a GPU and memory specification to a particular resolution, preset, and frame rate. For example, Borderlands 4’s PC requirements, updated May 29, 2026, list 8 GB as the minimum for 1080p at 30 fps on the low preset and 12 GB or more as recommended for 1440p at 60 fps on the medium preset. That is guidance for those profiles in this game, not a rule for all releases.
Nioh 3’s requirements show a wider range: its minimum profile lists 6 GB cards for 1080p at 30 fps on Very Low with upscaling; recommended lists 8 GB and 12 GB cards for 1080p at 60 fps on Standard with upscaling. High lists 12–20 GB cards for 1440p at 60 fps with upscaling, while Very High lists 12–20 GB cards for 2160p at 60 fps with upscaling. Read the associated target and preset rather than treating the memory figure as a standalone recommendation.

Some modern games ask for less
Not every current PC game requires 12 GB or more. For Windows, Larian lists Baldur’s Gate 3 at 4 GB or more minimum and 8 GB or more recommended. The developer cautions that meeting the minimum can still mean making quality concessions. NBA 2K25’s PC requirements list 4 GB minimum and 8 GB recommended. These are title-specific requirements, not proof that every game will work equally well with those amounts.
A 4K recommendation is not a universal threshold
Square Enix recommends 12 GB of VRAM or above for FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH at 4K. The same page’s listed minimum target is 1080p at 30 fps on Low, and its listed recommended target is 1080p at 60 fps on Medium. Keep the 4K-specific note separate from the memory figures attached to those 1080p profiles.

How to compare graphics cards for your games
- Set your target. Decide whether you want 1080p, 1440p, or 4K, and choose a frame-rate goal. A resolution target without a performance target is incomplete.
- Check the game’s current requirements. Look for the resolution, preset, and frame rate attached to each listed GPU. Minimum requirements do not promise high settings or a preferred frame rate.
- Factor in demanding settings. Texture quality and ray tracing can change memory needs. Check whether the game’s stated target assumes upscaling.
- Compare the whole GPU. Consider rendering performance alongside VRAM capacity, and weigh price, power draw, and physical compatibility. Do not rank different GPU models by VRAM alone.
AMD’s own guidance pairs an 8 GB RX 7600 with a 1080p target, a 12 GB RX 7700 XT with 1440p, a 16 GB RX 7800 XT with 1440p and 4K, and a 24 GB RX 7900 XTX with 4K. Those examples show one manufacturer’s product guidance; they are not an independent rule or a verdict on comparative value.

AMD reported a peak usage of 11.7 GB in Far Cry 6 in its May 16, 2023 performance-lab test at native 1440p, Ultra settings, and High ray tracing. The stated system used an RX 6750 XT with 12 GB, Adrenalin 23.4.3, an RTX 4060 Ti with 8 GB and driver 531.79 for comparison, a Ryzen 9 7950X3D, 32 GB of DDR5-5200 memory, and Windows 11. This is a vendor-reported result for one game and configuration, not a general estimate for ray tracing or all 1440p games. AMD’s VRAM guidance and test details provide the context.

Also distinguish VRAM from system RAM: VRAM is on the graphics card, while system RAM is the computer’s main memory. A system’s RAM total does not change the capacity printed for the GPU’s VRAM.
