GoldenEye 007 Plus is the fan project that documents a third-person camera for the original Nintendo 64 game. However, its public materials describe a source build—not a ready-to-install PC release—and do not establish a turnkey installation or verified compatibility route for the current snapshot. You will need a legally obtained, unmodified US NTSC ROM to follow its build instructions.
What the third-person mod is—and what it is not
GoldenEye 007 Plus is a community modification built on the decompiled GoldenEye source. Its project documentation lists third-person gameplay, adjustable camera and crosshair tuning, and work on aiming visibility, projectile alignment, and transitions back to cutscenes. Those details identify the feature, but they do not amount to a packaged PC installer or a guarantee that every part of the camera experience is finished. Several other projects can sound like a route to play GoldenEye on a computer, but they are separate efforts. None of the sources for those projects confirms that it runs the current Plus third-person snapshot.

GoldenEye: Source is another distinct project: a multiplayer project based on the Source SDK, not a third-person mod for the original N64 game. Its FAQ says its current SDK path is Windows-only and that it has no plan for a single-player mode.

What you need to build GoldenEye 007 Plus
- A legally obtained, unmodified US NTSC-U GoldenEye 007 ROM. The build notes specify the filename
baserom.u.z64. - The Plus source repository and its documented build settings and helper script.
- A compatible development environment to build the source. The README describes the build process; it does not present a one-click PC installer.
The project does not distribute the retail ROM or replace the original game. Its helper checks the ROM’s retail SHA-1 before extraction and building. Follow the project’s README and build documentation for the precise setup and verification steps; do not substitute a different region or a modified ROM when following instructions that specifically call for the unmodified NTSC-U image.
How to approach playing it on PC
- Start with the Plus repository. Check its current README and source snapshot to confirm the documented build requirements. The public snapshot describes itself as an R22-derived development tree through internal checkpoint V90, dated 2026-09-28.
- Obtain and verify your own ROM. Use a legally obtained, unmodified US NTSC-U copy named
baserom.u.z64. Run the project’s helper as its documentation directs; it verifies the expected retail SHA-1 before proceeding. - Build from source using the project’s instructions. The repository provides source-build settings and a helper, but does not establish a packaged release with a beginner installation path. If you are not comfortable building software from source, there is no documented one-click route to the Plus camera feature in the sources cited here.
- Treat emulator guidance as a test configuration, not a promise. The Plus README mentions Project64 with GLideN64 for emulator testing. That is not a compatibility guarantee for the current development snapshot or for every PC configuration.
Black world or other graphics trouble?
The Plus README warns that graphics-plugin settings can cause black-world symptoms independently of game-code regressions. For the Project64 and GLideN64 testing configuration it describes, the documented diagnostic is to set Force depth buffer clear = ON. This setting may help identify a plugin-related issue; it does not verify that the whole current mod works on a particular user setup. Consult the project README for context before changing other settings.

Which PC route should you choose?
- If the third-person camera is essential: GoldenEye 007 Plus is the project that documents it, but reaching it currently means working from source and meeting the ROM requirement. A supported, turnkey PC path is not established by the public materials cited above.
- If you want a documented native PC version of the original game: the separate GoldenEye 007 PC Port documents Windows and Linux, but does not document Plus’s third-person camera. Its features should not be treated as Plus features.
- If you are considering an emulator bundle: 1964 GEPD is a separate archived project, and current compatibility with the Plus snapshot is unconfirmed. Its bundle is not the mod itself and does not include a ROM.
- If you want a launcher: DesktopGoldenEye is a separate Windows project around 1964 GEPD; its v0.1 docs say it does not yet include a public mod loader.
