The first evaluation happens at the start of Year 3 and checks milestones from your first two years, but a low score is not permanent: place a diamond in the shrine to request a re-evaluation after you make more progress.
How Grandpa’s evaluation works
Grandpa evaluates your save at the start of Year 3. The score reflects progress in several areas rather than requiring one specific route, so you can reach the 12-point threshold through the milestones that fit your play style. The Stardew Valley Wiki lists 21 possible points in total.
The candle result is based on your score:

How to earn evaluation points
The following are the point-earning milestones listed by the Stardew Valley Wiki — Grandpa. Treat them as a menu of options: you do not need to complete every category to reach four candles.

Total earnings: up to 7 points
Cumulative earnings milestones begin at 50,000g and rise through 100,000g, 200,000g, 300,000g and 500,000g. Reaching 1,000,000g grants two points for that tier, bringing the total available from earnings to seven.
Skill levels: up to 2 points
Your combined levels across all skills grant one point at 30 total levels and another at 50. A total of 50 means level 10 in every skill.

Achievements: up to 3 points
- Complete the museum collection for one point.
- Catch every fish for one point.
- Ship every item for one point.
Relationships: up to 4 points
- Be married and have at least two house upgrades.
- Reach the friendship threshold with five villagers.
- Reach the friendship threshold with ten villagers.
- Build your relationship with your pet to approximately five hearts.
The villager checks use a threshold slightly below the visible eight-heart mark: the Wiki reports 1,975 relationship points, compared with 2,000 points for eight hearts. The exact evaluation score is not displayed in the game; the underlying value can be checked in the save file.
Community Center and keys: up to 4 points
- Complete the Community Center for one point.
- Complete the Community Center ceremony for two additional points.
- Obtain the Skull Key for one point.
- Obtain the Rusty Key for one point.
Choosing the Joja Warehouse route means you cannot earn the Community Center completion and ceremony points. The other milestone categories still offer routes to the 12-point target.

Choose milestones that fit your save
First look at what your character has already accomplished, then pursue the easiest remaining points for your preferred kind of play. Farm earnings and skill levels suit a save focused on growing the operation; collection milestones reward fishing, shipping and museum completion; friendship goals take time spent with villagers and your pet. The Community Center adds points if you choose that route, but it is not mandatory for a four-candle result.
Because earnings alone can contribute up to seven points, they can form a substantial part of a score, but you will need points from other milestones to reach 12. Likewise, you can make up for a missed category with progress elsewhere: the evaluation is based on the total, not on a required checklist of categories.

What to do if you get fewer than four candles
- Keep progressing toward milestones you have not yet met.
- Place a diamond in Grandpa’s Shrine to request another evaluation.
- Allow the re-evaluation to occur, then check the candles at the shrine.
- If all four candles are lit, interact with the shrine to claim the Statue of Perfection.
The first evaluation is not a deadline. The shrine can be used to request another evaluation after the initial one. When claimed, the Statue of Perfection produces 2–8 Iridium Ore per day, according to the Stardew Valley Wiki — Statue Of Perfection.
Two timing details to know
Marriage on Year 3, Day 1
If you marry on Year 3, Day 1, the marriage cutscene can take priority over Grandpa’s evaluation scene. The candles still reflect the evaluation, and the evaluation scene can play the next time you enter the farmhouse.

Claiming the reward
Four candles unlock the Statue of Perfection as a reward, but you must interact with Grandpa’s Shrine to claim it.
