Donkey Kong Bananza is a Nintendo Switch 2 action-adventure platformer built around a simple but unusually flexible idea: Donkey Kong can smash through much of the world, and that destruction opens routes and discoveries as well as delivering spectacle. It recalls Super Mario Odyssey in its platforming and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in its invitation to explore, but it is not literally a blend of either series. Whether it clicks depends on enjoying the search and problem-solving behind the smashing—not just the smashing itself.
What kind of game is Donkey Kong Bananza?
Donkey Kong Bananza is a 3D action-adventure platformer for Nintendo Switch 2. It was released on July 17, 2025, according to Nintendo’s official product page. Donkey Kong and Pauline descend through a layered underground world, where punching, digging and tearing up terrain are central ways to move through the environment.
The comparison in the title is useful as a shorthand for two different parts of the experience. Tom’s Guide likens the platforming to Super Mario Odyssey and the freedom of discovery to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Tom’s Guide review). That is a reviewer’s comparison of design sensibilities, not a claim that the game plays exactly like either one.
How does destruction work?
Smashing is not merely a visual effect or a way to clear enemies. Punching through walls can reveal routes, while digging tunnels and breaking apart terrain lets you change how you approach an area and search for hidden items. Nintendo describes DK using his strength alongside Pauline’s singing to break walls, carve tunnels, punch into the ground, and detach terrain that can be swung or thrown (Nintendo’s game page).

That freedom makes exploration feel physical: instead of only following a path designed into the scenery, you can make openings and test what lies underneath. The payoff is strongest when destruction helps you uncover something or solve a route through a layer. Nintendo Life reviewer Jim Norman praised the impact of breaking up the world but cautioned that it can lose its appeal if that is all you do (Nintendo Life review). The game’s central pleasure, then, is not simply how much you can destroy, but what destruction lets you find and do.
What are the underground layers and Pauline’s role?
The adventure descends through distinct underground environments rather than staying in one unchanging space. Each layer offers new ground to explore and reasons to look beyond the obvious route. Pauline accompanies Donkey Kong, and her singing supports Bananza transformations that change his abilities. These shifts give the exploration and traversal more variety than a single set of punches and jumps would allow.

The pairing gives the journey two complementary tools: DK reshapes the surroundings, while Pauline’s abilities help change how he moves and acts within them. Their roles are part of the game’s core exploration, not just a framing device for the descent.
Is Donkey Kong Bananza like Mario Odyssey or Zelda?
It shares some appealing qualities with both, but the useful question is what you want from those comparisons. Odyssey is a reference point for 3D platforming; Breath of the Wild is a reference point for curiosity and freedom to investigate. Bananza puts terrain manipulation at the center of that mix, so detours often involve breaking into or reshaping the world rather than simply spotting a distant landmark.

- If you like platforming: the movement and traversal offer a familiar point of entry for players drawn to 3D Mario, while destruction gives the routes a different character.
- If you like exploratory detours: the layered spaces reward looking for routes, hidden items and discoveries beyond the main way forward.
- If you want smashing to remain the whole attraction: expect diminishing returns. Nintendo Life’s review found that free-form destruction could lose impact when it became the entire activity.
- If camera or performance friction bothers you: the review-period reports are worth weighing before you buy, especially for deep digging and demanding later areas.
What are the review-period caveats?
Camera visibility is the clearest reported frustration. Nintendo Life and Tom’s Guide both noted difficulty with the camera underground; Nintendo Life specifically described trouble during intensive digging, alongside distant texture pop-in and noticeable dips in later, demanding layers. GamesRadar+ also praised the destruction and asynchronous co-op while noting camera and occasional performance issues (GamesRadar+ review).
These are observations from individual review-period play, not measurements of every scene or a guarantee about the current patched version. The available accounts do not establish how later updates may have changed performance, so treat them as reported caveats rather than a verdict on the game’s present technical state.

Do you need a Switch 2 to play it?
Yes. Nintendo lists Donkey Kong Bananza as a Nintendo Switch 2 game and lists a physical product edition on its official page. If you do not own a Switch 2, the hardware requirement is an essential part of the purchase decision; the cited product information does not establish current retail prices or store availability.
Is there DLC?
Nintendo lists DK Island & Emerald Rush as additional digital content, separate from the physical base game. Nintendo Support identifies the Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Store as purchase routes (Nintendo Support: How to purchase the DLC). Check your region’s store for current availability and price; neither is established here.

Verdict: Is Donkey Kong Bananza worth it?
Donkey Kong Bananza is a strong fit for players who want a 3D platforming adventure where exploration means changing the terrain, not just following a route through it. Its most distinctive idea works best when the layers give you reasons to punch, dig and investigate. If destruction alone sounds like enough, the novelty may fade; if you enjoy using it to uncover paths and discoveries, the Mario-and-Zelda comparison points toward the right kind of appeal.
