A dice-based roguelike uses dice as a meaningful part of how chance is generated, managed or turned into tactical choices. A traditional roguelike, by contrast, describes a set of broader play conventions—often turn-based actions, grid-based movement, procedurally generated content and permadeath. These labels refer to different things: a game can use dice and still fit a traditional roguelike definition.
Dice are a mechanic; “traditional roguelike” describes a structure
Dice tell you something about the game’s chance system. Depending on the game, a die might determine an outcome, offer a choice of actions, function as equipment, or give the player a way to influence an opponent’s moves. “Traditional roguelike” is a broader genre description focused on how play is organized.
There is no universally enforced definition. In a 2020 feature, Cogmind developer Kyzrati outlined a stricter set of traditional-roguelike conventions: procedural content, permadeath, grid-based play, turn-based actions and one primary player-character. The Cogmind FAQ gives a shorter summary—turn-based tactical or strategy games in procedurally generated worlds with permadeath—and acknowledges that definitions vary. RogueBasin’s community-edited overview also characterizes roguelikes broadly, rather than setting a binding rulebook.
So the useful question is not simply “Does this game have dice?” It is “What role do dice play, and which structural conventions does the game follow?”

What to compare when judging a game
| Axis | What to look for | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Core structure | Turn-based or real-time actions; grid-based or continuous movement; procedural content; permadeath or run resets; one primary character or multiple units | How closely the game matches a narrower traditional-roguelike description |
| Role of dice | Random outcomes, player-controlled rolls or rerolls, dice that select actions, dice used as build pieces, or dice that expose opponent actions | How chance is expressed and what decisions the dice create |
| Player agency and risk | Whether players can predict probabilities, mitigate poor outcomes, or adapt their plans | Whether dice mainly impose uncertainty or also provide tools for tactical control |
These axes can overlap. A turn-based, grid-based game with procedural levels and permadeath could also use dice as a central combat system. Conversely, a game can use dice without following the traditional structure.
What dice can add to play
Visible uncertainty
Dice can make chance feel concrete: a player sees a roll, a set of possible results, or a choice among dice. That can make probabilities easier to grasp than a hidden random calculation. It does not mean every dice system is transparent or fair; the actual rules determine how much the player can know.

Decisions inside randomness
Dice can create decisions when players choose which result to use, reroll, or build around. In an interview with Nintendo Life, Dicefolk co-designer Gregory Parisi said the team initially used dice to add randomness, then reconsidered the design when players had too little control. The developers gave players the ability to select enemy actions, adding a puzzle-like planning layer. Parisi described the tension this way: “With randomness, you can throw a wrench at them and they have to rethink their plan.”
Risk that can still frustrate
Player control does not eliminate the sting of bad luck. The Dicefolk developers discussed the frustration of consecutive poor rolls and their effort to give players more control. That is a design account of one game, not a rule about dice-based roguelikes generally: some games let players heavily mitigate rolls, while others leave more outcomes to chance.

Dicefolk illustrates the distinction
Nintendo Life describes Dicefolk as a tactical roguelike with dice-based combat and monster-catching. The developers also discussed run-specific combinations of creatures, equipment effects and synergies, which can vary how a run develops. Those combinations illustrate replay variation; they are not the same thing as procedural generation, and dice themselves do not imply permadeath.
The example is useful because dice in Dicefolk affect both uncertainty and agency. But its particular system—especially the ability to choose enemy actions—should not be assumed to apply to other games. The developers also described an aim for approachability and a harder Trial Mode; those are details of Dicefolk’s design, not genre requirements.

Does “traditional” mean old, or ASCII graphics?
No. Kyzrati’s account allows for new games to remain within the traditional-roguelike sphere while innovating. Nor does the label require ASCII graphics: visual abstraction varies across games, and the stricter feature list focuses on structural conventions rather than a single visual style.
Kyzrati also cautions against treating the label as settled: “Giving ‘roguelike’ a definition to satisfy everyone is an impossible task.” Use “traditional” to signal a narrower bundle of conventions, and specify which ones you mean when the distinction matters.

A practical way to classify a game
- Check the structure. Is play turn-based and grid-based? Are levels or other content procedurally generated? Does death end a run? Is there one primary player-character?
- Identify what the dice do. Do they simply determine outcomes, or can the player select, modify or build around their results?
- Look at control over risk. Can players plan around probabilities, reroll, or respond to an opponent’s available actions?
- Describe both dimensions. For example: “a traditional-style, turn-based roguelike with dice-driven combat” is more informative than treating “dice-based” and “traditional” as mutually exclusive categories.
