When a game leaves Xbox Game Pass, your subscription stops providing access to it. Your progress is expected to remain in cloud storage, but save availability is not established as a universal guarantee for every game. To keep playing, you’ll need another entitlement—usually buying the game—or wait until access is restored.
What changes when a game leaves Game Pass?
Game Pass access and game saves are separate. A title leaving the catalog means your subscription no longer supplies the entitlement to play it. Xbox’s Game Pass catalog presents buying a game as a way to keep playing.
The Xbox catalog includes a “Leaving soon” category, which can help you spot titles scheduled to depart. It does not establish a universal notice period, so check the catalog for the current listing and timing.
What happens to your save data?
Microsoft Community answers indicate that cloud saves remain available after Game Pass access ends and can be resumed if you regain access by renewing or purchasing the game. Treat that as expected guidance rather than a guarantee of indefinite retention for every title. The Xbox Support FAQ was not available as readable text for confirming a save-specific policy.

Whether a save carries over can also depend on the specific game and the version you play. If you switch between Xbox and PC, or between editions, check that game’s save and account compatibility before assuming the same progress will work across versions.
How can you keep playing?
Buy the game
Buying the game can restore an entitlement to play it without relying on its Game Pass catalog availability. Before purchasing, confirm that the store listing is for the same game and platform version associated with your save. Use the game’s current Xbox or Microsoft Store listing to verify the version and price.

Xbox advertises a Game Pass member discount of up to 20% on its catalog page, and its Xbox Wire article has recommended using the member discount for games due to leave. The maximum is an advertised offer, not a guaranteed discount on every title; check the game’s current price and offer terms.
Wait for access to return
If you do not buy the game, you can wait to see whether it returns to the catalog or regain access another way. Until you have an entitlement, an existing save does not by itself let you launch and play the game.

What to check before the game leaves
- Look for the game in the catalog’s “Leaving soon” category and note the displayed departure information.
- Decide whether to buy it or stop playing for now; compare the current price and any member offer for the exact title.
- If buying, match the platform and edition to the one you played, especially if you use both Xbox and PC.
- For cross-platform or publisher-account saves, verify compatibility with the game’s own support information rather than assuming progress transfers.
