If you want Android apps integrated with your Linux desktop, consider Waydroid instead. Genymotion Desktop is another virtual-device option, while Android-x86 and Bliss OS are better treated as Android-on-PC or virtual-machine projects—not interchangeable desktop emulators.
There are six useful options to consider, but they are not six equivalent products: an Android Virtual Device (AVD) is a configurable virtual device used by the Android Emulator, not a separate emulator. For games, check whether the app supports your machine’s processor architecture and whether your chosen setup can run it; none of these options guarantees compatibility with every Android game.
Which Linux Android emulator should you choose?
| Option | Best fit | How it runs Android | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android Studio Emulator | Android app development, device and API testing | Virtual devices managed through Android Studio | Google publishes substantial Linux hardware requirements. |
| Android Virtual Device (AVD) | Choosing a virtual device configuration for testing | A device profile and system image used by the Android Emulator | AVD is part of the Android Studio Emulator workflow, not an independent emulator. |
| Waydroid | Running Android apps alongside Linux desktop apps | Android system in a Linux container | Wayland, kernel support, and APK architecture affect compatibility. |
| Genymotion Desktop | Developer-focused virtual-device testing | Virtual Android devices | Free personal use is limited and has no technical support; paid licensing unlocks additional options. |
| Android-x86 | Experimenting with Android on an x86 PC or virtual machine | Android-based operating system | The project’s releases page lists Android 9.0 (Pie) as its newest Android-x86 line. |
| Bliss OS | Trying an Android-based PC or VM project | Android-based operating system | Verify current releases, hardware compatibility, and support before relying on it. |
For Android app development, begin with the Android Studio installation requirements and use its Emulator. To run apps in a more desktop-integrated environment, check whether your Linux session and the app’s architecture suit Waydroid. If you need another developer-oriented virtual-device product, compare the free personal tier and paid licensing for Genymotion Desktop.
What does “Android emulator for Linux” mean?
The phrase covers different ways of running Android. A virtual device simulates a configurable phone or tablet for development and testing. A container runs Android within Linux, with apps presented more like desktop applications. An Android-based PC system boots or runs as its own operating system, often on a PC or inside a virtual machine.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
- Virtual device: Android Studio Emulator and Genymotion Desktop.
- Container: Waydroid.
- Android-based PC or VM: Android-x86 and Bliss OS.
This difference matters if your goal is gaming. A tool designed to test app behavior across device profiles is not automatically the easiest way to play games, and game compatibility can depend on the app, system image, processor architecture, graphics support, and Google Play setup.
Android Studio Emulator and AVD: best for development and testing
Android Studio Emulator
Google’s Android Emulator is the most direct choice when you are building Android apps or need to test against virtual device configurations and Android API levels. Google supports Android Studio and the Emulator on Linux. Its published Linux requirements include a 64-bit distribution supporting GNOME, KDE, or Unity, glibc 2.31 or later, CPU virtualization, 16 GB RAM and 16 GB free storage for Android Studio plus Emulator, and a GPU with at least 4 GB VRAM for the listed configuration. These are published requirements, not a guarantee of smooth performance on every machine. See Google’s Linux installation requirements.
Hardware acceleration is recommended for Emulator performance when the host supports it. Google also documents software rendering as an option when graphics compatibility requires it; changing rendering mode is a compatibility measure, not a promise that a demanding virtual device will perform well. See Run apps on the Android Emulator and Configure hardware acceleration.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Android Virtual Device (AVD)
An AVD is a virtual device definition used by Android Emulator. It brings together a device profile and a system image so developers can test an app in a chosen virtual-device configuration. It is useful to include when comparing Linux Android options, but calling AVD a separate emulator would be misleading: it is part of the Android Studio Emulator workflow.

Check desktop session and kernel support
Waydroid’s desktop installation guidance for Ubuntu 22.04 and later calls for a Wayland session. That requirement is specific to the documented Ubuntu instructions; users of other distributions should consult the project’s desktop installation instructions for their environment and kernel support.
Check APK architecture before installing
An APK can fail even when Waydroid itself is installed correctly. The project warns that APKs found online are often ARM-only and will not work on x86_64. Check whether the app provides an APK compatible with your device architecture before treating the installation as a Waydroid problem. The project explains installation and compatibility in Install and Run Android Applications.

Google Play and GApps
If you use a GApps image, Google Play may require you to self-certify the device. Waydroid also distinguishes public GApps builds intended for individuals from vanilla builds for company use; do not assume proprietary Google components are unrestricted for commercial use. Consult the project’s Google Play certification guide and licensing information.

Choose Waydroid when: desktop integration is more important to you than configuring many virtual phone profiles, and your Linux session, kernel, and target apps are compatible.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Genymotion Desktop: another developer-focused virtual device
Genymotion Desktop is available for Linux and provides virtual Android devices for testing. Its free edition is for personal use, has feature limitations, and does not include technical support. Genymotion’s product page lists Android 5.0 through 15.0 for free and Android 16.0 for a paid license; the reviewed pricing page does not establish one universal price to quote. Check the current Genymotion pricing page and plan details before choosing.
For app compatibility, Genymotion strongly recommends ARM64 images because many modern Android apps are available only for ARM64. Confirm the target app’s ABI requirements before creating a device. This Desktop guidance is distinct from Genymotion SaaS: Genymotion Support says its SaaS service transitioned to exclusively ARM64 Android virtual devices on August 13, 2026. That cloud-service change should not be mistaken for a change to Desktop. See the application deployment guide and the SaaS architecture notice.

Android-x86 and Bliss OS: Android-based PC and VM routes
Android-x86
Android-x86 is an Android-based operating system project intended for x86 PCs and virtual machines, rather than a drop-in desktop emulator. Its official releases page displays Android-x86 9.0 (Pie) as the newest Android-x86 line, with Android 8.1 and older branches also listed. Treat that as the status shown on the project page, not as a statement about every downstream fork. The age of the listed Android line is a reason to weigh update recency and security before using it for everyday apps or accounts.
Bliss OS
Bliss OS is another Android-based PC or VM option named in the original list this article updates. The available official-source information does not establish a current version, pricing, or support status here. Check the project’s current release and hardware information directly before choosing it, and do not assume that the status of Android-x86 also describes Bliss OS.
Choose either route only when: you specifically want to experiment with Android as a PC or VM operating system and are prepared to verify release, hardware, and app compatibility yourself.

- Define the task. For building or testing an app, start with Android Studio Emulator or Genymotion Desktop. For apps alongside the Linux desktop, investigate Waydroid. For an Android-based PC experiment, consider Android-x86 or Bliss OS.
- Match CPU architecture. Check whether the app offers a build for your system’s architecture. ARM-only APKs will not work on x86_64 in Waydroid, and Genymotion recommends ARM64 images for many modern apps.
- Check the Linux environment. Compare your distribution, desktop session, kernel, virtualization support, RAM, storage, and graphics hardware with the option’s official requirements. Waydroid’s Ubuntu instructions specify Wayland; Android Studio publishes its own Linux baseline.
- Confirm Google Play needs. A game or app may depend on Google Play services or certification. For Waydroid GApps images, consult the project’s certification and licensing guidance rather than assuming Play Store access will work automatically.
- Assess update and support needs. For apps tied to newer Android versions or security updates, consider the published system-image or project release status and the support included in a paid or free tier.
No option in this comparison is established as a universal Linux gaming emulator. If your priority is a particular game, verify its architecture, Android version, graphics expectations, and store or service requirements against the specific option before investing time in setup.
