Retirement alone does not make a set rare, profitable, or likely to rise in price. If resale matters, check recent completed sales for the exact set and condition before buying, then account for shipping and other costs.
What does “retired” tell you about a set’s value?
Retirement means a set is no longer being sold as a current LEGO release; it does not guarantee that demand will exceed supply. An educational case published in INFORMS Transactions on Education in 2024 notes that many retired LEGO sets continue to sell on the secondary market below their original retail price, even years later. It describes aftermarket prices several years after retirement as highly variable. Read the INFORMS case.
There is a historical aggregate figure worth keeping in perspective: the same case cites a 2022 analysis by Dobrynskaya and Kishilova reporting an 11% compound annual growth rate (CAGR), or 8% after inflation, for the LEGO sets analyzed over 1987–2015. That is a result for the study’s set sample and period—not a forecast for a particular set or an estimate of what a buyer would net after fees, shipping, storage, or unsold inventory.
A more recent snapshot illustrates why year and measurement matter. BrickPrice’s live European retailer-price comparison, accessed October 4, 2026, reports a median of −5.0% versus original recommended retail price (RRP) for sets retired in 2025 and +122.2% for sets retired in 2019. These are observed retailer asking prices, not completed sales or a return available to every buyer. Even multiple shops listing a set does not prove it sold at those prices. How do you check what a retired LEGO set is worth?
- Find the exact set number and name. Broad averages mix unrelated themes, sizes, and release years. Search the set you are considering, not just a theme or “retired LEGO.”
- Check recent completed sales. BrickLink’s Price Guide includes a “Past 6 Months Sales” view based on live order data and excludes cancelled orders. Recent transactions are stronger evidence of what buyers paid than unsold listings. BrickLink explains its Price Guide.
- Look at current listings separately. BrickLink presents “Current Items for Sale” apart from sales history. Those prices show what sellers are asking now; they do not establish that anyone will pay that amount.
- Match condition and completeness. Compare sealed sets with sealed sets, and used sets with used sets of similar completeness. Check whether the box, instructions, minifigures, and extra parts are included, and ask about missing, damaged, or substituted pieces. The cited price sources do not establish a standard dollar or percentage adjustment for these differences.
- Compare the delivered price. Include shipping and any other transaction costs in what you will actually pay. A difference between a purchase price and a later sale price is not net profit unless you also account for the costs of buying and selling.
- Judge the evidence, not just the number of listings. A single active listing is one seller’s asking price. Thin sales history makes the estimate less dependable; use caution rather than treating a high ask as a market value.
Which condition should you buy?

No universal condition premium or discount is established by the available price-guide and marketplace references, so evaluate the actual contents and comparable sales rather than applying a fixed percentage.
Where can you buy retired LEGO sets?
Secondary-market options named in the INFORMS case include eBay, Amazon third-party sellers, BrickLink, Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, and toy or collectible conventions. Whichever channel you use, compare the exact condition and total delivered price, review seller feedback, and understand the platform’s return or buyer-protection terms before paying. Listings can differ in what they include even when they use the same set name and number.

If you want to build or display it
Decide what the set is worth to you as an experience or finished display, then set a maximum affordable delivered price. If your main goal is building, a similar currently available set or a parts-based rebuild may also be worth considering; the available evidence does not establish that rebuilding will be cheaper for any particular set.

If you hope to resell it
Assess the purchase cost and plausible future sale revenue independently. Use completed sales for comparable copies, account for transaction costs, and allow for the possibility that the set will not sell at your target price—or will sell below its original retail price. Historical averages and current retailer asks do not guarantee an individual result.
