Game developers earn money in several ways: selling a game upfront, receiving revenue from subscriptions, selling add-on content or virtual items, and—in some free-to-play games—showing advertising. A game’s price is not necessarily what its developer receives: publishers, storefronts, billing arrangements, and accounting rules affect how revenue is shared and reported. There is no single earnings formula for every game or studio.
How the main game revenue models work
The models differ in when players pay and what they receive. A game can use more than one: a paid release may later sell downloadable content, while a free-to-play game may earn through virtual items, subscriptions, or ads.

| Model | When the player pays | What is sold |
|---|---|---|
| Full-game sale | Usually once, before or at the start of play | A digital download or packaged physical copy |
| Subscription | Repeatedly, while access continues | Access to one game or to a broader service |

| Advertising | The player may not pay directly | Advertising inventory shown in or around a game |
Full-game sales bring in money upfront
A paid game can be sold as a digital download or a packaged physical product. Electronic Arts reported $1,343 million in digital full-game download revenue and $672 million in packaged-goods sales for fiscal 2024. These are EA-specific company results, not industry totals. EA also estimated that 73 percent of its Xbox One/Series and PlayStation 4/5 units sold in fiscal 2024 were digital; that estimate is limited to those console platforms and EA’s units.
For a one-time purchase, the buyer pays for the game itself. Whether the studio that made it receives all or part of the resulting revenue depends on publishing and distribution arrangements, as well as applicable fees.

Subscriptions pay for access over time
A subscription may grant access to one game or to a catalog of games and other service features. The Boston Consulting Group’s taxonomy gives Xbox Game Pass and Apple Arcade as examples of subscriptions to services, alongside subscriptions to individual games.
There is no single payment formula established for games included in a subscription service. Inclusion alone does not show whether a developer is paid per download, per hour played, through a guarantee, or under another negotiated arrangement. The terms can vary by deal.

In-game purchases and live services create repeat revenue
In-game purchases let players buy extras after they have entered a game. These can include downloadable content, virtual goods, and other optional content. A publisher may continue supporting a game and release additional items or experiences over time, often described as a live service.
Electronic Arts says its live-services revenue includes extra content, subscriptions, and other revenue beyond full-game sales. It identifies extra content in Ultimate Team modes and Apex Legends as material to its business, and says its free-to-play games are monetized through live services, particularly extra content. These disclosures describe EA’s business; they do not predict what another developer will earn.

Free-to-play games may rely on extras or advertising
A free-to-play game has no required upfront purchase, but it can still generate revenue. Optional content and virtual goods can monetize play over time. Advertising is another possible source, particularly for mobile games.
A December 2024 BCG report, drawing on Ampere Analysis, IDC, and BCG analysis, estimates that advertising makes up a substantially larger share of mobile game revenue than of PC and console game revenue. That is a market-level estimate for 2024, not an estimate of what a particular game can earn.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
- Redemption: Online
Why the listed price is not the developer’s take-home amount
A player’s payment may pass through a storefront or billing service that charges a fee. The applicable terms depend on the platform, country, transaction type, eligibility, and sometimes the developer’s annual earnings tier or a user’s install cohort. For example, Google Play’s published rules distinguish automatically renewing subscriptions from other transactions. Its documentation accessed October 4, 2026 describes region- and rollout-specific terms, including different treatment in Australia, the European Economic Area, Japan, the UK, and the US. The schedule is time-sensitive, so consult Google Play’s current service-fee documentation for the applicable conditions rather than treating one percentage as universal.
Google says 97% of developers distribute apps and use Google Play at no charge; among developers subject to service fees, it says 99% are eligible for a fee of 15% or less through its programs. Those are Google’s figures about its own developer population and eligibility—not a guaranteed rate for an individual game studio, nor terms for other stores.

Revenue, net revenue, and bookings are not interchangeable
When comparing figures, first check what each one measures. Consumer spending is the amount players spend. Net revenue reflects amounts retained after applicable fees and other deductions. Bookings are a separate reporting measure: EA defines bookings using sales of products and services adjusted for changes in deferred revenue on online-enabled games. A figure reported on one basis should not be compared directly with another without accounting for that difference.
Revenue mix also varies by platform and business. A mobile free-to-play title, a premium console release, and a subscription game can earn money in different proportions and on different schedules. Company disclosures such as EA’s fiscal 2024 filing document one publisher’s results; they are not a universal model for the industry.
