Neural MMO is a research environment for training and evaluating multiagent reinforcement-learning systems—not a commercial massively multiplayer game. OpenAI announced it on March 4, 2019, as a persistent, procedurally generated, tile-based world where many AI agents had to survive, gather resources and fight while learning alongside one another. The launch announcement described the design and its experimental scale; later projects use distinct versions, including Neural MMO v1.6 and Neural MMO 2.0.
What OpenAI launched in 2019
OpenAI presented Neural MMO as a way to study agents acting over long time horizons in an environment with a changing population of other agents. Unlike a task that resets after each short episode, its world was designed to keep running while agents learned concurrently. OpenAI described it as supporting “a large, variable number of agents within a persistent and open-ended task.” OpenAI’s March 4, 2019 announcement is the launch-era account.
“Open-world” needs a qualification here: Neural MMO represents its world as generated tiles and a compact set of game mechanics. The original project’s README says it was nowhere near the complexity of a real MMO. It is best understood as a controlled research simulation that borrows some structural features of online worlds, not as a virtual replica of one or a test of general real-world competence.
How agents survive and act
Resources, health and combat
In the launch environment, an agent had to preserve health by replenishing food and water and avoiding combat damage. Forest tiles provided limited food that regenerated over time; agents could replenish water beside water tiles. Combat offered three styles: Melee, Range and Mage.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Local observations and actions
Each agent observed a square crop around itself, including terrain and selected properties of nearby agents. It then chose movement and an attack for the next tick. The environment therefore required agents to respond to nearby opportunities and threats while managing the resources that kept them alive.
How the launch-era AI training worked
The baseline in OpenAI’s announcement was deliberately simple: a small fully connected network trained with vanilla policy gradients, a value-function baseline and reward discounting. The reward was one for every tick an agent remained alive. That made survival duration the objective, rather than asking the baseline to complete a hand-written list of tasks.

Because the number of nearby players could vary, the launch post says their features were reduced to a fixed-length vector by taking a maximum across surrounding-player features. OpenAI also released distributed training code based on PyTorch and Ray. These details describe the 2019 system and should not be assumed to describe later versions.
What the launch scale claims mean
OpenAI’s 2019 post said its experiments considered up to 100 million agent lifetimes, with 128 agents running concurrently in each of 100 concurrent servers. The figures are claims in the launch announcement, not an independently established benchmark for current systems or a statement that every experiment used that configuration.

The same post said, “We can train effective policies on a single desktop CPU.” This is a launch-era claim about the project’s experiments, not a compatibility guarantee for present-day computers, a modern hardware recommendation or proof that all workloads run efficiently on one CPU.
Later versions and research use
Neural MMO v1.6 in the 2022 challenge
The NeurIPS 2022 competition used Neural MMO v1.6, not the original launch version. Its published account describes 16 populations surviving in generated worlds by collecting resources and defeating opponents. The 2023 Proceedings of Machine Learning Research report records 500 participants and more than 1,600 submissions. These figures describe that challenge and its participation, rather than a measure of the 2019 release. The challenge publication provides its account.

Neural MMO 2.0
A separate 2023 paper describes Neural MMO 2.0 as a later rewrite. It reports compatibility with PettingZoo’s ParallelEnv API and a CleanRL PPO baseline connected through PufferLib. The authors report an efficiency performance improvement of over 300% in their Neural MMO 2.0 comparison; that result should be attributed to their comparison, not generalized across workloads or applied to the 2019 environment. The Neural MMO 2.0 paper also says that even top competition approaches did not learn to use all game systems, and that team specialization remained limited.

The original OpenAI repository is labeled archived and read-only, says its code is provided as-is and indicates that updates are not expected. It points to a separate repository for active development. The archived README’s setup describes Python 3.6 or later, an independent rendering client and PyTorch for experiment code; those are repository-page instructions, not confirmation that the old setup works on current operating systems or dependencies. The README identifies the OpenAI project code as MIT-licensed. See the original repository and its README for its status and setup notes.

What Neural MMO can—and cannot—show
Neural MMO offers researchers a way to study learning under persistent interaction, resource pressure and competition among agents. Its history also shows why impressive scale figures are not the same as broad intelligence: the game’s systems are bounded, and the Neural MMO 2.0 authors report that advanced competition entries still failed to use all of them or develop strong team specialization. Results in this simulation do not establish that an agent can transfer its behavior to a real MMO or the physical world.
