ASUS announced the original ROG Ally X on June 2, 2024. It kept the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor from the original ROG Ally but upgraded memory, storage, battery capacity, chassis, controls, cooling and connectivity. This is the 2024 ROG Ally X—not the later ROG Xbox Ally X or ROG Xbox Ally X20.
What did ASUS announce?
ASUS described the ROG Ally X as a new model of its Windows 11 handheld gaming console. The announcement focused on changes around the processor rather than a new chip: the 2024 Ally X retained the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme, while ASUS revised several other parts of the system. ASUS also paired it with Armoury Crate SE 1.5, which the company said brought a customizable game library and unified system updates. ASUS’s June 2024 announcement is the source for the specifications and product claims below.

What changed in the chassis, controls and cooling?
Chassis and controls
ASUS revised the chassis with deeper handles and a rounder shape, and adjusted the angles of the buttons and sticks. The rear macro buttons are smaller. ASUS rated the new joysticks for a five-million-cycle lifespan and said the revised D-pad was designed for more precise eight-direction input. These are manufacturer descriptions and ratings, not independent durability or control tests.

Cooling
ASUS said the revised fans were 23% smaller, used blades that were 50% thinner, and moved 24% more air through the system. The company also claimed the touchscreen could measure up to 6°C cooler. These figures describe ASUS’s product claims; they should not be read as results from an independent review or as a guarantee of temperatures in every game or environment.
Charging and connectivity details
In its ROG comparison article, ASUS said the Ally X supports charging at up to 100W. Reaching that rate requires a compatible charger and cable; ASUS’s statement does not establish compatibility for every third-party accessory. The ASUS ROG Ally and Ally X comparison also lists purchase links for the United States and Canada, but availability and listing identity can change.

How does the 2024 ROG Ally X relate to later models?
The name can cause confusion because ASUS later announced different handhelds with “Xbox” in their product names. The 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X is a separate model: ASUS specified a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB LPDDR5X-8000 memory, a 1TB M.2 SSD and an 80Wh battery. In June 2026, ASUS announced the ROG Xbox Ally X20, which has a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme and a 7.4-inch OLED display. Those later specifications do not belong to the 2024 ROG Ally X.
