Intel says its Precompiled Shaders feature can improve load times by 1.3× to more than 5×, depending on the game and system. That range includes results around a 2× speedup—the equivalent of halving a load time—but Intel does not promise that every supported game will load in half the time. The feature downloads pre-optimized shader files for select Steam games, reducing some shader compilation the system would otherwise do locally.
What Intel Precompiled Shaders does
Shaders are programs a game’s graphics pipeline uses to render effects and materials. A game may need to compile shaders locally, and some of that work can contribute to waits or pauses. Intel’s feature downloads pre-optimized shader files from Intel cloud storage for supported games, so less shader compilation may be needed when playing. Intel describes the feature in its March 17, 2026 announcement and its Arc gaming technologies overview.
Intel also describes a separate developer-facing collaboration with Microsoft called Advanced Shader Delivery. In that pipeline, a game developer packages Pipeline State Objects into a State Object Database; Intel’s offline compiler turns it into a Precompiled Shader Database for use at runtime. Intel says the approach is intended to accelerate loading and reduce stutter. This is the underlying collaboration, not a different set of user setup steps or a guarantee that every game supports the feature. See Intel’s developer description.
What Intel’s loading-time figures mean
Intel’s March 2026 announcement reports improvements ranging from 1.3× to more than 5×, varying by game and system configuration. These are Intel’s stated results, not an independent benchmark across all supported games. A speed multiplier also does not mean the same percentage of time saved in every case: a 2× speedup would halve the time for that measured load, while other results may be smaller or larger.

Intel separately advertises “more than 3x faster on average game load times” for Precompiled Shader delivery on its Arc G-series handheld page. The figure is a geometric mean across 14 supported titles, tested by Intel in May 2026 on an MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ at 35 W sustained power and 1080p High, with 2× upscaling where supported. Intel notes results may vary. It is a result for that test set and setup, not a prediction for every player’s PC or handheld.
Who can use the feature

- Open Intel Graphics Software.
- Go to Graphics → 3D Rendering → Precompiled Shaders.
- Turn on the Precompiled Shaders setting.
Intel says this starts automatic downloads for supported Steam games already installed on the system. Installing a supported game later also triggers a download. The feature therefore needs an internet connection and storage space; enabling it does not add support for an unlisted game or a non-Steam installation.
What to expect after a graphics-driver update
Precompiled shader downloads are not a fix for every kind of stutter. Intel Support says shader processing after a driver update can cause brief pauses or gameplay stutter while shaders are processed in the background. Its guidance is to wait for processing to reach 100%, which may take several minutes depending on the game and system. Intel says performance should stabilize after processing completes. See its driver-update stutter guidance, reviewed May 13, 2026.
Quick Recap
How to judge whether it is relevant to your setup
- Confirm the exact processor or Arc GPU qualifies; Intel’s test on an MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ does not make that handheld a requirement.
- Check that the specific game appears on Intel’s current supported list and is installed through Steam.
- Keep benchmark conditions in view. Game, system, power, resolution, and upscaling all affect results, so the handheld test figure is not a like-for-like prediction for a desktop.
- If considering an Arc B-Series card such as an Arc B580, verify current driver and feature compatibility for the exact system before buying. The B580 is an example of the supported GPU category, not a requirement to use the feature.
