Yes: in one 2024 test, AMD’s four-core EPYC 4124P delivered playable frame rates in several games when paired with an RTX 4060. That result shows four cores do not automatically rule out gaming, but it applies to one 1080p test setup—not every game, graphics card or PC.
What the EPYC 4124P is
The EPYC 4124P is an enterprise-oriented processor, not a gaming chip marketed for consumer PCs. AMD specifies four cores, eight threads, a 3.8 GHz base frequency, boost up to 5.1 GHz, a 65 W TDP, 16 MB of L3 cache, two memory channels and support for DDR5-5200. AMD’s EPYC 4004 datasheet lists those specifications.
AMD announced a $149 launch price for the 4124P on May 21, 2024. That is a historical launch price, not a verified current retail price or indication of stock. AMD’s launch announcement gives the original figure.
How the 2024 gaming test was configured
RandomGaminginHD tested the 4124P with an Nvidia RTX 4060, 32 GB of 6400 MHz memory and an Asus Prime X870E motherboard. The games were run at 1080p, with settings varying by title. Tom’s Hardware reported the results on December 13, 2024. They describe that particular system and test; they are not controlled comparisons against other CPUs or a promise of what another PC will achieve. Tom’s Hardware’s report provides the test results.

| Game | Resolution and reported settings | Average FPS | 1% lows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cyberpunk 2077 | 1080p, High | 87 | 62.6 |
| Stalker 2 | 1080p, Medium | 62.4 | 39.5 |
| Indiana Jones and the Great Circle | 1080p, Medium | 95 | 49.9 |
| Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 | 1080p, Medium | 53.4 | 33 |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | High settings, Ultra textures and TAA High as reported | 78.7 | 59.2 |
| Counter-Strike 2 | 1080p, High, anti-aliasing off | 269.6 | 128.2 |
| Fortnite | 1080p, Medium, Nanite enabled | 96.2 | 70.8 |
All figures are from RandomGaminginHD’s test as reported by Tom’s Hardware. Average FPS describes overall throughput; 1% lows offer a sense of how much performance dipped during the slowest frames. That difference matters when judging consistency: a high average alone does not tell the whole story.
Why the graphics card changes the answer
The RTX 4060 pairing is central to the result. Tom’s Hardware also noted that in several tests using a more powerful RTX 4070 Super at 1440p, the processor struggled to keep the GPU fully utilized. Counter-Strike 2 was one example, with reported GPU utilization around 50% to 75%. In other words, a faster graphics card can expose CPU limits that are less apparent with the RTX 4060.

These results support a narrow conclusion: the 4124P could produce playable performance in the tested games and settings with an RTX 4060. They do not establish that it will make good use of any GPU, or that it is a sensible purchase for a gaming build.

What the test does—and does not—show
- Four cores are not an automatic barrier. The reported results include averages above 60 FPS in several tested games, but outcomes vary by title and the listed settings.
- This is one creator’s test. It is not an independent multi-system review, and the figures should not be treated as guaranteed results across different hardware or game versions.
- There is no fair CPU ranking here. To compare processors, results need to come from matched game versions, graphics cards, resolutions, settings and memory configurations, with both averages and 1% lows reported. These results alone do not rank the 4124P against current gaming CPUs.
