Steam’s interface was shown running on a Nintendo Switch in a community demonstration using Ubuntu Linux, according to Tom’s Hardware’s April 17, 2026 report. That is a notable technical experiment—not evidence that Nintendo or Valve supports Steam on Switch, or that the console can run Steam games reliably.
What the Switch demonstration showed
The report describes Steam’s user interface running on a Switch under Ubuntu Linux, with Proton 11.0-Beta1 and FEX 2604 involved in the ARM-related setup. It establishes that the Steam client interface was demonstrated; it does not document a consumer-ready feature or a complete, reproducible installation guide.
In particular, seeing Steam open is not the same as verifying that games launch, play correctly, or perform well. The report supplies no controlled performance measurements, validated game-by-game compatibility list, or detailed accessory requirements.
How Proton and FEX fit together
Proton handles Windows game compatibility on Linux
Valve describes Proton as “a tool for use with the Steam client which allows games which are exclusive to Windows to run on the Linux operating system. It uses Wine to facilitate this.” Proton addresses the Windows-to-Linux software compatibility problem; it does not, by itself, make software built for one processor architecture run on another. Valve’s explanation and build notes are in the Proton repository.

FEX is relevant to the architecture difference
The Switch is based on an ARM-family platform, while many PC games are designed for x86 processors. In the reported arrangement, FEX is associated with translating x86 execution for ARM Linux, while Proton provides Windows-game compatibility on Linux. These tools address different parts of the challenge; their presence does not establish that any particular game will work on the Switch.
Valve documents ARM64 Proton builds and notes a limitation: those resulting builds cannot be used in x86 Steam running via FEX. That distinction matters because ARM-native components and an x86 Steam client running through translation are not interchangeable configurations.

Is this an official way to use Steam on Switch?
No official Switch support is established by the demonstration. Valve’s SteamOS page describes SteamOS as Linux-based and explains Proton’s role in running much of the Steam library. It says Valve expects most users to use SteamOS preinstalled on a Steam Deck or on a device incorporating SteamOS; it does not list Nintendo Switch as a supported SteamOS device.
The reported setup is therefore best understood as a community Linux experiment, not a Nintendo feature or a Valve-supported Switch configuration. The available reporting does not provide enough verified setup detail to recommend specific steps, hardware accessories, or a parts list.

Can you play Steam games on a Nintendo Switch this way?
The demonstration alone does not answer that question for any individual game. A working Steam interface is only one milestone: game compatibility, input support, stability, and performance would each need to be tested separately. Neither the report nor the cited Valve documentation provides a verified list of Switch-tested Steam games or benchmark results for this setup.
So the accurate takeaway is narrow: Steam’s interface was demonstrated on a Switch running Ubuntu Linux with ARM-related Proton and FEX components. Claims that the Steam library—or even a particular game—now runs well on Switch go beyond what these sources establish.
