If you want to keep your existing operating system and install a configurable emulation app, choose RetroArch. Both can use a keyboard, but neither guarantees mouse support in every game: that depends on the game and its emulator or core.
What is the practical difference?
Batocera is a bootable Linux-based retro-gaming system. You write its image to storage and start the PC from that device; its front end is based on a modified version of EmulationStation. RetroArch, by contrast, is an application and frontend that runs libretro cores. You install it in a supported operating system, add the cores you need, and load compatible games through them. The choice is therefore as much about how you want the PC to start and be managed as it is about input devices.

Can you use a keyboard and mouse with Batocera?
Yes. Batocera lists a keyboard and mouse among the accessories useful with a desktop PC, including for standalone emulator configuration and light-gun games. But keyboard availability is not the same as automatic, controller-style mapping. EmulationStation binds a keyboard for one player, and Batocera does not run its controller configuration generator for keyboards. If a game or emulator needs different keys, you may have to rebind controls in that emulator.
Batocera’s documentation also flags practical keyboard issues: non-default layouts, keyboards without anti-ghosting, and high debounce settings can affect input. These matter particularly when several keys must register together or when key presses seem unreliable.

Is RetroArch easier for keyboard controls?
RetroArch has an explicit keyboard remapping workflow: it maps keyboard inputs to its RetroPad abstraction and lets users map keys to RetroArch hotkeys. That makes it a natural choice if you want to configure bindings within the application rather than boot into a dedicated gaming system.
There is an important exception for cores that read keyboard input directly, as some arcade and vintage-computer cores do. RetroArch hotkeys may intercept keys the core needs. Libretro recommends using Game Focus or unbinding conflicting shortcuts in that situation. The Windows interface is designed with gamepad navigation in mind, although its setup guide says it also supports keyboard and mouse.

Will the mouse work in the games you want to play?
Do not choose either platform on the assumption that a mouse will work in every retro game. Platform-level mouse support, such as using a mouse in an interface or for configuration, does not prove that a particular game accepts mouse input. Compatibility depends on the title and the emulator or core used to run it.
Before setting up around mouse gameplay, identify the games you plan to play and check input support for their specific emulator or core. This is especially important if you mean a particular PC port, arcade game, or light-gun-style title: the fact that a platform recognizes a mouse is not enough to confirm that the game will use it as intended.

What hardware and storage does Batocera need?
Batocera’s desktop guide gives broad baseline guidance, not a promise that every system will run well. It lists a 32-bit x86 processor, 1 GB RAM, graphics supported by nouveau/Mesa, and a 640×480 screen as minimum guidance. Its recommended column lists a 64-bit x86_64 processor, 2 GB RAM or more depending on the system you want to emulate, a supported GTX/RX/HD-series graphics card, and a display at least as large as the target system’s desired resolution. The guide cautions that the real requirement depends on the system being emulated; unsupported graphics can make performance very slow or unplayable. See the Batocera desktop hardware guide.
For installation, Batocera says to download the image for the PC architecture, write it to USB, SD, HDD, or SSD, and select that device when the PC starts. It specifies 16 GB as the minimum and 32 GB as recommended for full functionality; with only 16 GB, automatic updates cannot be downloaded. A recent PC may also require changing a Secure Boot setting. These are installation-storage figures, not a guarantee that the same capacity will suit a large game library. Follow the Batocera installation guide.

How to choose
- Choose Batocera if this PC is meant to behave like a dedicated console and you want it to boot into an integrated retro-gaming environment.
- Choose RetroArch if you want to keep your current operating system and are comfortable installing cores and configuring controls within an application.
- For keyboard-heavy games, consider whether you prefer RetroArch’s application-level remapping or are willing to configure keys in individual Batocera emulators. Direct-keyboard cores in RetroArch may need Game Focus or hotkey changes.
- For mouse-based games, decide only after checking support for your specific game and emulator or core; neither platform’s general mouse support guarantees it.
- For a Batocera build, check PC graphics compatibility and the requirements of the systems you want to emulate, then plan boot storage around the 32 GB recommendation and your library size.
Setting up RetroArch on Windows
Libretro’s Windows guide describes a portable setup and provides stable and nightly downloads. It names Windows 7 and later, but operating-system support and current releases can change; check the current guide before installing. The documented workflow is:
- Download and set up RetroArch using the official Windows guide.
- Open the Online Updater and install the core appropriate for the system you want to emulate.
- Load compatible content with that core.
- Configure keyboard bindings in RetroArch’s input settings; if the core reads keys directly, use Game Focus or unbind shortcuts that conflict with the game’s inputs.
Is one faster or more compatible?
The documented differences support a workflow and input-configuration comparison, not a performance winner. Results depend on the PC, graphics support, target system, game, and chosen emulator or core. Batocera’s hardware recommendations are broad, and RetroArch’s ability to run a core does not establish how well that core will perform on a particular computer. Match the setup to the games and hardware you actually plan to use rather than treating either name as a blanket performance guarantee.
