Riot classifies boosting as ranked manipulation, says account sharing violates its Terms of Service, and lists escalating bans, reward consequences, and reversal of boosting-related LP and MMR gains. Honest placements that produce a lower rank than expected are different: Riot says to contact Player Support if you believe your result is significantly too low.
What counts as boosting in League of Legends?
Riot defines boosting as someone playing Ranked on an account that is not theirs to raise that account’s MMR. The definition includes a booster playing on the account directly and a booster duo-queuing with the account owner to inflate the owner’s MMR. Riot’s August 2025 developer update describes the core behavior as a more skilled player logging into another player’s account to play Ranked, whether or not the account is later returned: Riot’s 2025 ranked update.
Riot also uses the term hitchhiking for being carried to a higher division by queuing with another account, typically a booster; its 2025 update also calls this “bussing.” These are forms of ranked manipulation, not simply situations where one teammate is better than another.
Conduct that crosses the line
- Giving someone else your login so they can play Ranked and increase your MMR.
- Paying or asking another player to play Ranked on your account.
- Duo-queuing with a booster or smurf in order to inflate your account’s MMR.
- Deliberately lowering an account’s MMR or using a deliberately deranked account to help another player climb.
Riot’s broader category of ranked manipulation also covers intentional deranking in Flex queue. Its assessment is about conduct and MMR manipulation, not just whether one player is much more skilled than another. See Riot’s Ranked Play FAQ.

Can you get banned for boosting?
Yes. Riot’s published schedule applies to both the boosted account and the player doing the boosting. The schedule is Riot’s stated policy, not a prediction that every case will receive a particular outcome; Riot assesses accounts and their histories.
| Offense | Riot’s listed ban |
|---|---|
| First | 3 days |
| Second | 14 days |
| Third | Permanent ban |
Riot also lists Honor reduction, exclusion from current-season Ranked rewards (or revocation if already received), and reversal of LP and MMR gains attributed to boosting. Riot says penalties can be linked across accounts it is confident belong to the same player. The Ranked Play FAQ has the current policy details.

Is LoL boosting safe for your account?
No. A boost can put both the account owner and the booster at risk of Riot’s listed penalties. Sharing or selling an account also violates Riot’s Terms of Service, according to its FAQ. That applies even if the account is eventually returned to its owner.
Riot says its assessment of account sharing uses multiple signals; a shared IP address alone is not enough. It also says the boosting system does not decide from visible rank alone: it looks at account MMR, and major, unusual MMR changes over a short time can indicate boosting or ranked manipulation. Riot does not publish the exact thresholds or full detection logic, so no outside service or player can reliably promise that a boost will go undetected.

Can a much higher-ranked friend duo with you?
Not if the purpose or arrangement is to inflate your Ranked MMR. Riot specifically says a Challenger player duo-queuing with someone on an alt to boost them is not allowed in Ranked. You can play normal Summoner’s Rift or other game modes together instead.
The relevant distinction is not simply that your friend is better. Riot identifies duo-queueing with a booster or smurf to raise an account’s MMR as boosting; ordinary play together outside Ranked is a different activity.

Are alternate accounts allowed?
Riot says you may have another account when you create and level it yourself, do your best in placements, do not share it, and do not manipulate ranked play. Its 2025 update likewise says a self-made alternate account used by its creator is safe if the player does not deliberately derank it.
- Allowed under Riot’s stated conditions: an account you made and leveled yourself, which you play yourself and place honestly.
- Not allowed: an account another person plays for you, an account used to manipulate MMR, or an account deliberately deranked to affect ranked outcomes.
What if your placements put you much lower than expected?
A low placement result alone does not mean you broke the rules. Riot gives the example of a high-MMR player who genuinely tries their best in placements but lands in Gold; it says that outcome by itself is not smurfing. Riot advises contacting Player Support if you believe you were placed significantly too low. It does not promise a correction or specify a response time.

Rank expectations can also shift over time. In March 2026, Riot said it adjusted rank/MMR distribution at both the bottom and top of the ladder, including moving some experienced players from Iron into Bronze and some higher-end Diamond players into Master. That context may help explain why a current rank differs from an earlier-season expectation, but it does not establish what rank any individual should receive: Riot’s March 2026 ranked update.
