SteamOS combines a controller-first Steam gaming interface with a Linux desktop where you can browse, install applications, and run programs outside Steam. Proton also lets many Windows games run. The caveat is hardware: Valve designs and supports the experience around Steam Deck and officially powered SteamOS devices; installing SteamOS on an ordinary desktop is a more case-by-case proposition.
What SteamOS gives you beyond a console-style interface
SteamOS is a Linux-based operating system built around Steam gaming. On Steam Deck, switching to Desktop Mode opens a conventional desktop environment. Valve says you can use it to browse the internet, download and install applications, and run programs outside Steam.
That makes SteamOS useful for more than launching games, but it is not a promise that every Linux application or peripheral will work. The desktop environment is based on Arch Linux, and Valve advises checking that third-party applications support Arch. Package formats, drivers, desktop integration, and system updates can all affect whether a particular app or device behaves as expected. Linux experience helps with troubleshooting, but does not remove those compatibility questions.
How Windows games run—and how to check yours
Proton is the compatibility layer that lets many Windows games run on SteamOS. Compatibility is determined title by title, not by a blanket guarantee that a Windows game will work.

- Open the game’s Steam Store page. Find its Steam Deck Compatibility section and check the current rating.
- Read the unmet requirements. For a game rated Playable or Unsupported, Valve’s software guide points readers to the requirements that prevented a Verified rating. Those details can reveal whether the limitation matters for your setup.
- Consider updates and launch requirements. Third-party launchers, anti-cheat systems, and game updates can affect usability or change how a title behaves.
- If a game has trouble, try the latest Proton version. Valve recommends this as a troubleshooting step; it cannot guarantee that a particular title will work.
Check the games you actually care about rather than relying on a library-wide total: compatibility can differ from one title to another and can change over time.
Steam Deck versus installing SteamOS on your own PC
The intended SteamOS experience is clearest on Steam Deck, where the operating system and hardware are designed to work together. Valve’s installation and repair guidance also covers officially powered SteamOS devices. For other AMD-powered handhelds and desktops, Valve says compatibility has improved with recent SteamOS 3.8 updates, but it warns that Steam Support may have limited ability to troubleshoot hardware outside officially powered devices.

That distinction matters if you are considering an existing desktop. Do not assume that an AMD processor or graphics card alone makes the whole system officially supported. Compatibility depends on the specific hardware, peripherals, and software configuration, and support may fall to you or the device maker. Valve’s SteamOS Installation and Repair page is the canonical starting point for recovery media and device-specific installation or repair instructions. Back up important content before choosing any wipe-and-install option.

| Steam Deck | Valve’s primary SteamOS hardware, with a Steam-first gaming interface and Desktop Mode. | Use Valve’s Steam Deck documentation; check each game’s current compatibility details. |
| Officially powered SteamOS device | SteamOS guidance may apply, but hardware details can differ by device. | Valve says users of third-party AMD devices should contact the manufacturer for detailed support when they are not using a Steam Deck. |
| Self-built or other desktop PC | Potentially usable, but compatibility is case by case; do not assume full support from a component label alone. | Review Valve’s current installation instructions and hardware support limits, and be prepared to troubleshoot outside Valve Support. |
Using Steam Deck with a monitor and peripherals
The Steam Deck specification lists USB-C with DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode and video output of up to 8K at 60 Hz or 4K at 120 Hz. Those are port capabilities, not a guarantee that every dock, monitor, cable, resolution, and refresh-rate combination will work. A USB-C dock or hub can be useful if your monitor and peripherals need connections the Deck does not provide directly, but the right setup depends on the ports and display you have.

Decide whether SteamOS fits your use
- Choose the Deck-style experience if you want Steam gaming first, a controller-friendly interface, and a Linux desktop available when needed.
- Check your game list first if particular Windows games are essential; inspect their current Steam Deck compatibility details and any listed requirements.
- Expect more hands-on work on a desktop if you are installing outside officially powered hardware. Check the specific GPU, peripherals, and installation path rather than treating SteamOS as a universal desktop-Linux image.
- Prefer a desktop-first workstation? SteamOS can run desktop applications, but its defining purpose and interface are Steam gaming. Make sure the applications and system-maintenance approach you need suit its Arch-based environment.
