How Much Weight Regain Is Normal After Losing Weight?

Some regain can happen after weight loss, but no single percentage or timeline defines what is normal for everyone. Treatment type and measurement method matter.

There is no single amount of weight regain that is “normal” for everyone. What to expect depends in part on how you lost weight—for example, through lifestyle changes, weight-management medication or bariatric surgery—and on the definition and time period used to measure regain. Some regain is common in particular settings, but a study cutoff is not a personal medical allowance.

Why there is no universal “normal” amount

Studies do not all define successful maintenance or regain in the same way. Some measure whether someone remains a specified percentage below their starting weight; others measure how much of the weight they initially lost has returned. Those are different outcomes, so their thresholds cannot be treated as interchangeable personal rules. A 2017 analysis in the NIDDK Central Repository found no single maintenance cutoff that agreed across all the definitions it compared.

For example, among participants who had initially lost at least 10% of their weight, regaining no more than 25% of the weight lost showed strong agreement with some definitions based on remaining at least 5% or 10% below starting weight. The agreement varied with the initial-loss group and the definition used. That 25% figure is a research classification, not a recommended amount to regain or a boundary between healthy and unhealthy change.

To interpret any reported regain figure, look for the population studied, treatment, denominator (starting weight or weight lost), follow-up period and precise regain threshold. Without those details, a percentage alone can be misleading.

What to expect after stopping weight-loss medication

Some regain after stopping weight-management medication is probable, according to the U.S. National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). Its guidance does not give a standard amount or timeline that applies to everyone. The outcome depends on the individual and the medication context; there is no universal post-medication figure to use as a forecast.

Do not stop, restart or change a medication based on a scale change or this article. NIDDK says treatment duration depends on benefits and side effects, and medication decisions should be made with a health care professional. See its guidance on prescription medications for overweight and obesity.

How weight regain after bariatric surgery is measured

Some people regain a portion of the weight they lost after bariatric surgery. NIDDK says the amount can vary with starting weight, procedure and how consistently a person follows eating and activity changes. Its current overview reports average losses of 15–30% of starting weight after weight-loss surgery, varying by surgery type; that describes average weight loss, not regain. It is not a regain estimate. See NIDDK’s overview of weight-loss surgery.

Published surgical figures illustrate why definitions matter:

Source and population Reported outcome How to interpret it
NIDDK professional blog reporting PCORnet Bariatric Study findings, approximately 2020 Average weight loss at five years was 25.5% after gastric bypass and 18.8% after sleeve gastrectomy. Within five years, fewer than 5% of gastric bypass patients and fewer than 12% of sleeve gastrectomy patients regained to within 5% of their starting weight. These findings apply to the study population and the stated threshold; they do not describe all patients or every definition of regain. Source: NIDDK professional blog.
Obesity Canada’s 2025 bariatric surgery guideline chapter It reports significant regain in 25–35% of people two to five years after surgery, defining significant regain as at least 15% of the initial post-surgical weight loss. This uses a different threshold and follow-up window from the PCORnet figures, so the estimates should not be compared as if they measured the same outcome. Source: Obesity Canada guideline chapter.

These are population findings, not a way to diagnose an individual’s progress. A clinician can help interpret a person’s trend in light of their procedure, health and follow-up care.

Why maintaining weight loss can be difficult

Weight maintenance involves more than willpower. NIDDK explains that metabolism slows during weight loss and the body needs fewer calories at a lower weight; hormonal and other factors may also make maintenance harder. These factors help explain why keeping weight off can be challenging, but they do not predict how much any one person will regain. Read NIDDK’s guidance on eating and physical activity to lose or maintain weight.

Weight change also needs context: the sources cited here do not establish a universal short-term scale-change threshold that signals lasting regain. A number by itself cannot establish its cause or show whether it is medically concerning.

  • Keep a consistent routine. CDC recommends consistent eating patterns and planning for changes in routine. It notes that many people who maintained weight loss for a year continued eating fewer calories than they had before losing weight. See CDC’s tips for keeping weight off.
  • Monitor a trend if that is useful to you. CDC suggests that recording weight once a week can be one monitoring approach. A basic scale is optional; tracking does not tell you by itself whether a change is medically concerning.
  • Build activity around your circumstances. CDC reports that people who maintained weight loss were often active for 60–90 minutes of moderate activity most days. NIDDK lists 150–300 or more minutes a week as a strategy that may help prevent regain, and says at least 300 minutes a week may be useful for that purpose. These figures come from different guidance contexts; neither is a universal prescription or a guarantee. Personal ability and medical conditions matter.
  • Arrange continuing support. NIDDK advises weight-loss programs to include an ongoing maintenance plan and support suited to a person’s new weight. Its guide to choosing a safe and successful weight-loss program describes ongoing counseling and support as features of a safe, successful program.

When to discuss regain with a health professional

Contact a health professional if regain is persistent, you have health concerns, or you want help interpreting a change after medication or surgery. They can consider your treatment, health and individual circumstances rather than applying a universal percentage. Obesity is a chronic disease, and needing continued support does not mean you have failed.
