How to Avoid Pokémon TCG Preorder Scams and Fake Listings

Before paying for a Pokémon TCG preorder, verify the seller, product details, delivery terms, payment protection, and complaint deadlines.

Before paying for a Pokémon TCG preorder, verify who is selling it, what the listing actually promises, and whether your payment has recourse if the cards never arrive. Compare the product with Pokémon’s official references, be wary of prices far below suggested retail, and keep the transaction on-platform. A polished listing or secure “https” address does not establish that a seller or product is legitimate.

How Pokémon TCG preorder scams work

A preorder listing can advertise a product the seller does not have or cannot deliver. In a January 2026 bulletin, Singapore’s ScamShield described buyers paying deposits for Pokémon card preorders through online platforms, then discovering the scam when the cards did not arrive or the seller became unreachable. The bulletin reported at least S$958,000 lost to e-commerce scams involving the sale of Pokémon trading cards in Singapore since October 2025. That figure is limited to the stated place, category, and period; it is not a global loss total or a measure of the likelihood that any particular listing is fraudulent. ScamShield’s January 2, 2026 bulletin urges buyers to purchase from authorised sellers.

There is no established global prevalence figure for Pokémon TCG preorder fraud. A deposit request alone does not prove a scam, but an irreversible direct transfer to an unverified seller leaves you with fewer practical ways to recover your money.

Where to start when checking a seller

Pokémon Center Support identifies Pokémon Center, Pokémon automated vending machines, limited-time deals at major retailers, and existing mass-market retail partnerships as channels for Pokémon TCG cards. This is not a complete regional directory, and it does not certify every third-party marketplace listing. Check the official Pokémon site for your region and verify a seller’s identity and sales channel independently. Pokémon Support’s guidance on where to find cards is a starting point, not a blanket endorsement of every seller who mentions Pokémon.

On a marketplace, inspect recent feedback and contact details, and ask questions through the platform so the exchange is recorded. Look beyond an overall rating: a seller’s recent history, the terms of this exact offer, and how the seller responds to specific questions matter more than a high score on its own. The FTC recommends checking seller reviews and contact information, reading listing terms, and preserving transaction records. FTC online-shopping advice also warns that a secure connection alone does not establish that a site is legitimate.

What to check in the listing before you pay

  • Exact product: Read the title and description for the product name, language, edition, quantity, and included items. Make sure the listing says whether it is a preorder or an item the seller claims to have in hand.
  • Dates and delivery: Compare the stated release date with the estimated shipping or delivery date. A release date is not a delivery promise; check the seller’s terms for what happens if fulfillment is delayed.
  • Images and condition: Stock images can identify a product but cannot show that the seller possesses a particular item or establish its condition. When condition or the specific item matters, look for actual-item photos and ask for clarification through the marketplace.
  • Price and packaging: Compare the offer with official product information and suggested retail pricing. Pokémon Support advises learning what official products look like and says a pack priced dramatically below suggested retail is a near-certain counterfeit warning. A low price is a reason to investigate, not proof by itself. Pokémon’s counterfeit-card guidance notes that fake booster packs can be especially hard to identify.
  • Payment and returns: Read the return policy and check how to report non-delivery or suspected counterfeits, including any deadlines. Keep payment within the marketplace and choose a method with dispute or buyer-protection options where available.

The FTC specifically advises: “Don’t buy from anyone who wants you to pay outside the marketplace’s payment system.” It also cautions shoppers against paying with gift cards, cash reload cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers in this context. For a preorder deposit, be especially cautious about direct bank transfers or similar payments that may be difficult to reverse.

How to judge Pokémon Center preorders

Pokémon Center has its own preorder process; its terms should not be treated as universal rules for independent shops or other marketplaces. For select merchandise, Pokémon Center accepts preorders before release and requires a valid credit card. It may place an authorization hold until the item is ready to ship, with the charge posting when it ships. A canceled preorder is not charged, although a temporary pending authorization may remain until the financial institution releases it. Pokémon Center says it cannot guarantee that a canceled item will still be available to preorder. See Pokémon Center’s preorder information for its terms.

High demand can affect availability: Pokémon Support says it is working to increase production and replenish impacted products at participating retailers, and Pokémon Center may use a virtual queue during periods of increased traffic. A queue or temporary stock-out is not evidence that an unrelated seller’s preorder is legitimate. Pokémon Support’s counterfeit-card page includes its availability guidance.

How to compare two listings

Apply the same checks to each seller rather than letting a lower price or more professional-looking page decide for you.

Check What to compare
Seller Identity, recent history, contact details, and whether the channel can be independently verified.
Product Exact version, language, quantity, and whether the offer is a preorder or in-hand item.
Evidence Official product references, packaging, and whether photos show the actual item or stock art.
Price How the offer compares with suggested retail; treat a dramatic discount as a warning to investigate.
Fulfillment Release date, estimated delivery date, shipping terms, and the seller’s explanation of delays.
Protection Payment recourse, return terms, complaint deadlines, and the marketplace’s counterfeit-review process.

What to do if the cards do not arrive or look fake

  1. Save your evidence. Keep the listing URL or screenshots, product description, seller identity, order confirmation, shipping details, and all messages.
  2. Contact the seller through the original platform. Keep the conversation in the transaction record and follow the marketplace’s claim process.
  3. Check deadlines promptly. Do not wait indefinitely for a seller’s reply if the marketplace or payment provider has a reporting window.
  4. Escalate when appropriate. If the seller does not resolve the issue, contact the marketplace. The FTC also recommends contacting your card issuer to dispute a charge when appropriate.
  5. Get a cautious authenticity assessment. Pokémon suggests holding a suspect card up to a bright light and asking a specialist trading-card shop to evaluate it. Neither a simple light check nor a visual inspection conclusively authenticates a sealed booster pack.

TCGplayer orders: check the platform’s specific process

TCGplayer says its Safeguard covers presale orders that do not arrive or are not as described. For a counterfeit claim, the buyer must submit order details and the suspected card must be received by TCGplayer for review to qualify for a refund. Its refund policy requires counterfeit claims to be reported within 30 calendar days of the estimated delivery date. These are TCGplayer-specific terms, not rules for other marketplaces; confirm the current policy and follow the live order workflow. See TCGplayer Safeguard and its refund policy.
