First check where the update is running: on an Xbox console, in the Xbox app on Windows, in Microsoft Store, or through Windows Update. Then check connection stability and competing network use. On Windows 11, use Microsoft’s Get Help Windows Update troubleshooter for Windows Update problems; do not assume its settings or cache steps will fix a game download in the Xbox app or on an Xbox console.
Why game updates can take a long time
There is no single setting that makes every update fast. Microsoft says Windows update download time primarily depends on internet connection speed, network settings, and update size (Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ). A large update may take time even on a working connection, while network instability or other devices using bandwidth can slow progress.
The download source matters, too. A game updating through Windows Update is a different case from a game updating in the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, or on an Xbox console. Troubleshooting intended for one source may not apply to another.
Start with checks that apply to any platform
- Identify the source. Note whether the update is on an Xbox console, in the Xbox app, in Microsoft Store, or through Windows Update.
- Check the connection. Confirm that the device is online and the connection is stable. Microsoft advises checking Wi-Fi or reconnecting to Wi-Fi or Ethernet when troubleshooting connection problems (Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance).
- Look for competing traffic. Other downloads, streams, or devices on the same network may be using bandwidth. Pause nonessential transfers temporarily to see whether the update changes pace.
- Give a large update time. A slow-moving download is not automatically a fault; update size and connection conditions affect how long it takes.
Fix a slow Windows Update download in Windows 11
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
For a Windows Update problem in Windows 11, Microsoft recommends starting with the Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Open Get Help, search for Windows Update troubleshooting, and follow the guided diagnosis. Microsoft also recommends checking the internet connection (Windows Update troubleshooter; Windows Update FAQ).

Check Delivery Optimization activity and scope
In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Delivery Optimization. Its Activity Monitor can show download sources and speeds. Delivery Optimization covers Windows updates, Store apps, and other Microsoft products; it can use Microsoft sources and eligible peer sources for download parts (Microsoft Learn: Delivery Optimization; Delivery Optimization reference).
Do not expect its bandwidth limits to speed up every game update. Microsoft documents those limits for automatic Delivery Optimization downloads and says they do not apply when you manually start a Windows Update download or download a Store app. Changing the limit may therefore have no effect on the download you are watching.

Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet if available
If the Windows device is on Wi-Fi and the slowdown seems connection-related, connect it to Ethernet temporarily and compare. This is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix: it can help identify whether Wi-Fi is contributing, but it will not resolve every cause of slow downloads.
If the game is updating in the Xbox app or Microsoft Store
First make sure you are troubleshooting the correct download source rather than a Windows Update error. Check the connection, pause competing network activity, and, if possible, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet. Delivery Optimization relates to Windows Updates, Store apps, and other Microsoft products, but that does not establish that it is slowing every Xbox app game download.

If a Microsoft Store download is involved, bear in mind that Delivery Optimization bandwidth limits do not apply to a Store app download you start manually. If the issue is an actual Windows Update error rather than a slow game download, use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance instead of treating Windows Update cache steps as a general fix for Xbox app games.
If the update is on an Xbox console
Check that the console is connected and that the network is not busy with other downloads or heavy use. Because console menu labels and support steps can vary, use current Xbox Support for instructions matching your console and any error message. Avoid applying Windows settings or Windows Update cache instructions to a console download.

Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft (Windows 10 support ends). Microsoft’s Delivery Optimization documentation describes Windows 10 and Windows 11, but that does not change Windows 10’s support status or make every Windows 11 troubleshooting step available in the same way on Windows 10.
