It reaches Paladin’s Extra Attack and protective aura, plus Warlock’s Deepened Pact and level-6 subclass feature. It is a balanced recommendation, not a proven universal damage winner: the best split depends on your difficulty, oath, Warlock subclass, and priorities.
Recommended level-12 split: Paladin 6 / Warlock 6
This split combines the core melee thresholds from both classes. Paladin 5 gives Extra Attack; Paladin 6 adds its protective aura. Warlock 5 unlocks Deepened Pact, which grants an Extra Attack with your pact weapon, and Warlock 6 adds the chosen subclass’s level-6 feature. Select Pact of the Blade at Warlock level 3. The attraction is role flexibility: a Charisma-oriented character can bring Paladin features and pact-weapon melee together. Choose the oath and Warlock subclass for the features and character concept you want; the available evidence does not establish one oath, spell list, stat spread, or equipment setup as the universal best.
How the Extra Attack interaction changes by mode
Paladin’s Extra Attack and Deepened Pact’s pact-weapon Extra Attack interact differently depending on difficulty. Outside Honour Mode, their interaction can provide three attacks per Action once you have Paladin 5 and Warlock 5. In Honour Mode, those Extra Attack features do not stack, so do not choose the split expecting that third attack. BG3 Wiki: Extra Attack

Larian’s Patch 8 Stress Test Update #3 says, “Deepened Pact now correctly grants an Extra Attack via Pact of the Blade on Honour Mode.” That confirms Deepened Pact functions in Honour Mode; it does not make the attack stack with Paladin’s Extra Attack. Larian Studios: Patch 8 Stress Test Update #3
Alternative outside Honour Mode: Paladin 5 / Warlock 5
If you are playing outside Honour Mode and prioritize attacks per Action over Paladin 6’s aura and a Warlock 6 subclass feature, Paladin 5 / Pact of the Blade Warlock 5 reaches the Extra Attack interaction at level 10. The remaining two character levels are a choice, not an automatic optimization:

- Put them in Paladin if you want the level-6 aura or the next Paladin feature your oath provides.
- Put them in Warlock if you prefer further Warlock progression, including the level-6 subclass feature.
That three-attacks-per-Action interaction is not available in Honour Mode. For Honour Mode or a more balanced level-12 character, the Paladin 6 / Warlock 6 recommendation avoids making the build hinge on the stacking interaction.
Choosing a Warlock subclass and weapon approach
Hexblade: a Charisma-led weapon option
Patch 8 introduced Hexblade Warlock. Larian’s notes clarify that Pact Weapon and Hexed Weapon use Charisma as their modifier, making Hexblade relevant to a Charisma-focused melee approach. This supports considering Hexblade; it does not establish it as stronger than every other Warlock subclass. Larian Studios: Patch 8

Pact of the Blade is the key Warlock choice
Choose Pact of the Blade at Warlock 3 to establish the pact-weapon route. At Warlock 5, Deepened Pact grants its pact-weapon Extra Attack. Warlock 3 alone does not reach that Extra Attack threshold. BG3 Wiki: Pact of the Blade

For the intended Charisma-led attack and spell approach, prioritize Charisma in your build plan. However, there is no ability-score prerequisite to take a second class in Baldur’s Gate 3: Larian confirmed the game removed multiclass ability-score requirements. A particular Charisma score may be useful for your chosen approach, but it is not required to multiclass. Larian Studios: Community Update #21

Why older guides may omit current options
Patch 8 added both Hexblade Warlock and Oath of the Crown Paladin. Larian described Patch 8, announced April 15, 2025, as the final major game patch that would add content, while noting that minor bug fixes could continue.
