Yes—PlayStation Portal can stream select PS5 games from Sony’s servers without connecting to your PS5. The feature launched on November 5, 2025 (November 6 GMT), and requires PlayStation Plus Premium, an adult account, and a compatible game. It is separate from Remote Play, which connects to your paired console.
How Portal Cloud Streaming works
With Cloud Streaming, the game runs on Sony’s servers and streams to your PlayStation Portal. Your home PS5 does not need to be on or available, so you can play while someone else uses the console under another account—or while it is switched off. Sony introduced the feature for Portal on November 5, 2025 (November 6 GMT). Sony’s launch announcement describes the service and its initial game selection.

Cloud Streaming is not a way to stream every game you own. It supports select digital PS5 games in your library and select titles from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog. Eligibility depends on the game and region, and the selection can change. Check the current game listing for your account and territory before relying on a particular title.
Cloud Streaming vs. Remote Play
| Feature | Cloud Streaming | Remote Play |
|---|---|---|
| What it connects to | Sony’s servers | Your paired PS5 |
| Does the PS5 need to be available? | No. The console can be off or used by another account. | Yes. It connects to the paired console. |
| PlayStation Plus requirement | PlayStation Plus Premium | No PlayStation Plus membership required |
| Which games can you play? | Select compatible digital PS5 games and catalog titles | Supported games installed on your PS5 |
| Availability | Game selection varies by region and changes over time | Depends on the games available on your console |
Sony explains the two Portal modes and their requirements in its Cloud Streaming launch announcement. Both modes need a working network connection, but only Cloud Streaming removes the need for your own console to be available.

What you need to use Cloud Streaming
- A PlayStation Portal Remote Player and a PlayStation account.
- An active PlayStation Plus Premium membership. Portal Cloud Streaming is restricted to adult accounts.
- A game that Sony currently marks as compatible for Cloud Streaming in your region.
- Broadband Wi-Fi. Sony’s general Portal guidance specifies at least 5 Mbps to use the device and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. Actual quality and connectivity vary with the network environment.
The Portal is hardware; buying it does not include the required Premium membership. Premium is a separate subscription with recurring fees and cancellation terms. Remote Play, by contrast, does not require PlayStation Plus.
How to start a cloud-streamed game
- Connect your PlayStation Portal to Wi-Fi and sign in to your PlayStation account.
- Confirm that the account has an active PlayStation Plus Premium membership and is an adult account.
- Open the Cloud Streaming home screen on Portal and search or browse for a compatible game.
- Select a game that is currently available for streaming in your region and start it. If it is not listed as streamable, use Remote Play with a supported game installed on your paired PS5 instead.
Sony does not establish that a particular menu label or game listing will remain unchanged across software updates or regions. If a title you expect is missing, check its current PlayStation listing and your account’s regional availability.

In March 2026, Sony announced refinements including an improved search interface, clearer trophy notifications and a revised game-invite notification. Sony also reported that Cloud Streaming monthly users grew 162% year over year in January and that over 50% of PS Portal users were PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers. Those are Sony-reported figures for the December 2025 to January 2026 period, not independent market measurements. Sony’s March 2026 update describes the changes and figures.

No. Headphones are not a prerequisite for Cloud Streaming. Sony says compatible wired headphones or PlayStation Link devices can provide 3D Audio in supported games. Its examples include Pulse Explore earbuds and the Pulse Elite headset; these are optional accessories, not requirements for using the feature.

Cloud Streaming is not the 2024 beta
Sony tested Portal Cloud Streaming in a beta announced in November 2024, before the general launch in November 2025. The beta had its own requirements and feature exclusions, so its details should not be treated as the current service specification. The launch announcement is the relevant reference for the later public feature.
What to expect from the Portal screen
Sony describes the PlayStation Portal Remote Player as having an 8-inch LCD with 1080p resolution at 60 fps. That is the device’s display specification, not a guarantee that every streamed game will sustain a particular frame rate or image quality. Sony says the experience can vary with the game and network. Sony’s product announcement gives the display details.
