Nintendo 64 games can look soft on modern TVs because the console sends an analog standard-definition picture that the TV must interpret and enlarge, often from a composite connection that blends image and color information. A compatible S-Video cable is the simplest upgrade to try. If your TV has no analog inputs, use a scaler that explicitly supports the N64’s 240p/480i signals. These changes can improve clarity and stability, but they cannot add detail the original game never produced.
Why N64 games look blurry on a modern TV
The console sends a standard-definition analog signal
An original N64 does not output a modern HD picture. Its analog signal must be interpreted and scaled to fit a flat panel’s much higher native resolution. The result depends on several links in the chain: the game and console output, the cable, the TV or external scaler, and the display’s own processing.
Composite video can soften detail
The familiar yellow composite plug carries picture information together in one signal. That can soften fine detail and color edges compared with S-Video, which separates luma (brightness detail) from chroma (color). RetroTINK recommends S-Video for its 2X MINI and says composite produces lower-quality results: 2X MINI product documentation.
Some softness is part of the original presentation
A better cable and scaler can reduce avoidable softness or instability, but they cannot make an N64 game render at HD resolution. The original game’s image and output impose limits that no external scaler can undo.

Start with the cable and TV settings
Try compatible S-Video before buying a processor
If you currently use composite, an N64-compatible S-Video cable is the simplest improvement to investigate. Check the console revision and region first: not every PAL N64 supports S-Video. The 2X MINI’s N64/SNES cable is intended for NTSC and compatible PAL systems; its special circuit supports PAL consoles that themselves output S-Video, and the cable is not for other equipment. Consult the manufacturer’s compatibility notes rather than assuming a cable works with every regional model.
If you suspect the console or cable may be faulty, test that connection before concluding the TV is responsible for all the softness. If you use S-Video and see chroma noise, a shielded cable may help. RetroTINK’s quick-start guide says its Auto setting adds a high-frequency luma filter in S-Video mode to reduce chroma cross-talk, particularly for PAL/PAL-60 N64 users with chroma noise unless they use shielded S-Video cable: RetroTINK 5X Pro quick-start and firmware information.
Check the TV’s input and processing
- Select the input the console is actually connected to.
- Preserve the 4:3 presentation if that is how you want the game displayed.
- Experiment with sharpening and noise reduction. Excessive sharpening can create halos, while noise reduction can smear detail.
TV menu names and behavior vary, so there is no universally ideal setting established for every display. Change one setting at a time and compare the same game scene.

Use a scaler if your TV needs HDMI
Many current TVs lack analog inputs. An external scaler accepts the console’s analog signal, handles standard-definition formats such as 240p or 480i, and outputs HDMI in a mode the TV supports. Confirm the scaler supports the signal and output mode you need; a device that merely has HDMI connectors is not necessarily designed to process retro-console video correctly.

The RetroTINK 2X MINI accepts composite and S-Video, supports inputs such as 240p/480i, and line-doubles them to 480p HDMI. Its documentation recommends S-Video for better quality: RetroTINK 2X MINI. This is a straightforward option when the main need is converting an analog N64 signal for an HDMI TV.
Advanced processor: more inputs and output choices
The RetroTINK-5X Pro documents composite, S-Video, component, RGB, and SCART inputs, as well as 240p/480i support and multiple digital output modes. Its 1440p modes are identified as experimental, and its manufacturer cautions that composite results are low quality. The documentation specifies approximately 0.25 frames of input latency in Framelock mode and approximately 0.25–1.25 frames in Triple Buffering; those are specifications for this product and modes, not universal scaler measurements: RetroTINK-5X Pro product documentation.

More processing and output choices are useful only if they address your setup. Before choosing an advanced unit, check its supported output modes against your TV, along with input compatibility, latency, current availability, and the features you actually need.
Choose an image style that suits the game
Scaling controls involve trade-offs rather than a single best setting. Smoothing can make jagged edges less prominent, but can also make detail look softer. Sharper scaling makes pixels and artifacts more visible. Compare options on the same game and display instead of relying on a setting that looks best in a product demonstration.
RetroTINK’s product comparison discusses N64-specific differences between smoothing and bilinear filtering: RetroTINK product comparison and guidance. Treat those descriptions as manufacturer guidance, not an independent test of every game and TV.

When an internal HDMI mod or Switch 2 setting makes sense
Internal HDMI modification
An internal HDMI modification is a more involved alternative to an external scaler. The 2021 UltraHDMI quick-start guide documents output settings including 480p and controls such as de-blur: UltraHDMI quick-start guide. It establishes that this route exists, not that every N64 revision is compatible, that installation is simple, or that a kit or service is currently available. Verify the exact console and installation requirements before proceeding.
Nintendo 64 Classics on Switch 2
If you are playing the Nintendo 64 Classics software rather than using an original console, Nintendo Support says display settings can only be changed on Switch 2 and includes a CRT Filter option: Nintendo Support: Nintendo 64 display settings. This software setting does not change the original N64’s video output.
