Start by updating Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and your PS5, then quit and relaunch the game or reload the previous checkpoint. If stuttering or long loading times continue, test graphics and display settings one at a time, check where the game is installed, and reserve reinstalling or Safe Mode for later. These are sensible official troubleshooting steps—not a documented, guaranteed cure for a specific Rift Apart stuttering or loading defect.
First, update the game and PS5
- On the PS5 home screen, highlight Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, press the options button, and select Check for Update. Install any available game update. Insomniac recommends updating the game before troubleshooting crashes or submitting a ticket. Insomniac’s frequent-crash guidance (updated November 20, 2025) also recommends trying its later checks for frequent crashes, not as a confirmed fix for stuttering.
- Check for PS5 system software updates in Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Follow the on-screen instructions if an update is available. See PlayStation’s instructions for checking updates.
After updating, restart the console and test the same section of the game. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether the symptom changes.

Quit and relaunch, or reload a checkpoint
For a quick, reversible check, quit the game completely and launch it again. If the stutter or unusually long load began at a particular point, try reloading the previous checkpoint. Insomniac Games Support says, “Most issues can be resolved by reloading the previous checkpoint or quitting and relaunching the game.” This is general game-issue advice, not a promise that either action will resolve a persistent performance problem in Rift Apart. Insomniac’s ticket guidance was updated November 21, 2025.
Test graphics and display settings one at a time
Compare Performance and Fidelity modes
Switch between Performance and Fidelity modes in the game’s graphics settings, then replay the same area or action. Insomniac lists trying these modes in its frequent-crash guidance. Treat the comparison as a diagnostic: that guidance does not establish that either mode fixes stuttering or frame pacing. If neither changes the symptom, restore your preferred mode.

Temporarily test VRR and HDR
Insomniac also says disabling Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and HDR at the console level could help with frequent crashes. To test those features, open Settings > Screen and Video and temporarily change one setting at a time. Check the same gameplay section after each change; restore your preferred setting if there is no improvement. These are crash-troubleshooting suggestions, not verified Rift Apart stutter fixes. Insomniac’s guidance covers the distinction.
Protect your save before testing a saved point
If the problem consistently happens near a particular save, Insomniac recommends making a manual save and loading it where possible. You can also try an available auto-backup: from the main menu, select a save slot and look in the load section for auto-backup saves, as described in Insomniac’s ticket guidance. Do not delete your primary save as a troubleshooting experiment.

Check whether the game is on USB extended storage
If Rift Apart is installed on USB extended storage, move it to the PS5’s internal storage and test again. PlayStation includes this step in its guidance for game-start problems: How to troubleshoot issues when starting a game. This is a platform troubleshooting check; the guidance does not claim it will shorten Rift Apart loading times or fix stuttering. It is not a recommendation to buy an SSD or replace hardware.
Reinstall only after simpler checks
If updating, relaunching, and the relevant settings or storage checks have not helped, consider deleting and reinstalling the game. Insomniac says reinstalling may be needed for consistent crashes, and PlayStation lists deletion and reinstallation among its checks for game-start or update trouble. Those recommendations are not a guarantee of better performance in Rift Apart. Before changing anything involving saved data, verify that your progress is backed up. Use PS5 Safe Mode cautiously
Safe Mode includes separate tools for different situations. PlayStation lists Clear System Software Cache for system-feature issues or performance drops, and Rebuild Database to scan the drive and create a new database of system content. Neither is documented as a Rift Apart-specific stuttering fix. Follow PlayStation’s current Safe Mode instructions and read the description of the selected option before using it.
Some Safe Mode options can erase data. Back up important data to USB or cloud storage before selecting an option that could affect it. Cache clearing, rebuilding the database, resetting the console, and reinstalling system software are different actions; do not treat a reset or system-software reinstallation as a routine early step.

When to contact support
If the issue persists, note any error code, describe what happens, record exact steps that reproduce it, and capture a screenshot or video if feasible. Insomniac asks players to update the game and system software before submitting a ticket. Contact the support channel that best matches what you are seeing:

The available official guidance does not document a current, specific Rift Apart PS5 stuttering or long-loading defect, a matching patch, or a guaranteed remedy. Stuttering alone is not proof of a hardware fault; persistent symptoms are a reason to share evidence with support rather than assume a cause.
