For gaming, the Steam Deck OLED generally lasts longer than the original ASUS ROG Ally Z1 Extreme in published comparisons. The LCD Steam Deck and original Ally were nearly tied in one synthetic gaming benchmark, so there is no single runtime that applies to every game. The result depends on which Deck and Ally you mean, the game, and the settings.

Which one lasts longer while gaming?

In GamersNexus’s 2024 game tests, the Steam Deck OLED outlasted both the LCD Deck and original ROG Ally Z1 Extreme. In one Dead Cells comparison, the OLED Deck lasted 47% longer than the Ally in Performance mode. That figure applies to that game and configuration, not to gaming in general. A separate Notebookcheck comparison recorded 4.2 hours for the OLED Deck and 1.2 hours for the Ally Z1 Extreme; those results likewise reflect that review’s test conditions.

The answer is less clear for the LCD Deck. Tom’s Guide’s PCMark 10 gaming battery test measured 1 hour 40 minutes for Steam Deck and 1 hour 43 minutes for the original Ally—only a three-minute difference. A synthetic benchmark is not a prediction for every game, but it shows why the original Ally cannot be declared the shorter-lasting device in every comparison.

Battery size is not the same as play time

The LCD Steam Deck and original 2023 ROG Ally each have a 40Wh battery; the Steam Deck OLED has 50Wh. Valve says the Deck provides several hours of play for most games and estimates approximately 7–8 hours for lighter activities such as game streaming, small 2D games, and browsing. That is a manufacturer estimate for lighter use, not a heavy-game runtime.

Valve Steam Deck OLED 1TB Handheld Gaming Console
  • 1TB NVMe SSD
  • 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
  • Wi-Fi 6E
  • 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
  • Carrying case with removable liner

Power draw helps explain why capacity alone cannot settle the comparison. GamersNexus lists APU power ranges of 4–15W for the Deck variants and 9–30W for the original Ally. Actual consumption and runtime vary with the workload and device settings. (Specifications and test comparisons: GamersNexus; Valve’s battery and charging information: Steam Deck technical specifications.)

What the published numbers measure

PCMark 10 gaming battery test, Tom’s Guide, circa 2023 1 hour 40 minutes 1 hour 43 minutes A synthetic gaming benchmark; the three-minute gap is not a universal real-game advantage. Tom’s Guide
Continuous web browsing at 150 nits, Tom’s Guide, circa 2023 3 hours 50 minutes 5 hours 51 minutes A lighter browsing workload, not gameplay. Tom’s Guide
Dead Cells gaming comparison, GamersNexus, 2024 OLED lasted longer than LCD and Ally; OLED was 47% ahead of Ally in Performance mode Shorter than OLED in the cited comparison Devices used their native resolution and refresh rate, approximating default use rather than holding all display variables constant. GamersNexus
Gaming comparison, Notebookcheck, 2024 Steam Deck OLED: 4.2 hours Ally Z1 Extreme: 1.2 hours A separate workload and test; it supports the OLED’s advantage in that comparison, not a fixed runtime for other games. Notebookcheck

Do not average these figures into one expected battery life: they come from different workloads, settings, and reviews. Tom’s Guide also notes a display mismatch between the original Ally (1920×1080, 120Hz) and LCD Deck (1280×800, 60Hz). Running each device at its native display settings is useful for estimating ordinary use, but it is not a controlled comparison of identical resolution and refresh rate. Tom’s Guide’s comparison reports those display specifications.

Why results change from game to game

Battery life depends on what the handheld must render and how it is configured. A demanding game, higher brightness, higher frame-rate target, or more demanding performance mode can change power draw. Light browsing or a small 2D game is a different workload from a graphically demanding 3D game; a benchmark result should not be treated as a promise for either.

For a meaningful head-to-head, compare the same game and gameplay sequence, and match brightness, resolution, frame-rate cap, refresh rate, and power mode as closely as possible. Native settings better reflect how a device may be used by default, while matched settings make the comparison more controlled. State which approach was used, since they answer different questions.

Check which Steam Deck and ROG Ally you mean

“Steam Deck” may mean the 40Wh LCD model or 50Wh OLED model, and their results are not interchangeable. Likewise, the figures above concern the original 2023 ROG Ally Z1 Extreme, not every product sold under the Ally name. The original Ally also had a distinct Z1 configuration; tests for one processor variant should not be applied automatically to the other.

Do not transfer these original-Ally results to the ROG Ally X or newer Xbox-branded Ally versions. Their battery performance requires model-specific tests. The comparison here is grounded in reviews published in 2023–2024, so firmware and game updates may affect absolute runtimes.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

Which should you choose for travel or long sessions?

If gaming endurance is a priority and you are choosing between the Steam Deck OLED and original ROG Ally Z1 Extreme, the published gaming comparisons favor the OLED. If you are comparing the LCD Deck with the original Ally, the evidence is more workload-dependent: one synthetic gaming test found them essentially tied, while the OLED-specific advantages do not apply to the LCD model.

For travel, plan around the game and settings you actually use rather than the best-case light-use estimate or a single review number. If you need to compare devices you already own, run the same game sequence at matched settings and record the time until each reaches the same low-battery threshold.
