If you’ve finished a character-focused game and want another story with memorable characters, start by choosing what you want more of: relationships that build over time, role-playing through dialogue, a more authored narrative, or combat alongside the story. These recommendations offer different pleasures rather than one universal “best.”
Choose your next game by the kind of story you want

For relationships that grow across a long arc: Mass Effect Legendary Edition
Mass Effect Legendary Edition is the clearest choice here if what you miss is spending time with a recurring cast and watching decisions carry forward. The bundle contains the trilogy, and GamesRadar+ says decisions transfer between its games. That makes it a substantial commitment, but also gives the series room to build continuity across multiple entries.
GamesRadar+ lists PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. Check the exact edition and platform at purchase time; availability can vary by region and storefront.
For role-playing through dialogue and skills: Disco Elysium
Disco Elysium: The Final Cut makes the protagonist’s personality and abilities central to how you move through the story. As GamesRadar+ describes it, choices affect interactions with the world and the way characters respond. The trade-off is that a skill choice can close off some interactions, so its agency is about shaping your route and role-play—not a promise that every decision changes the ending.

#1 Best Overall
For a narrative-first science-fiction shift: 1000xResist
Choose 1000xResist if you want a break from combat-heavy games while keeping the focus on story. GameSpot describes a science-fiction narrative about society and memory, built around exploration, moral choices, and multiple endings, with no combat. It is the most clearly narrative-led option in this group.
For dialogue and difficult decisions: Citizen Sleeper 2
Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector is a fit if you want character-rich storylines and choices framed as moral challenges. GameSpot highlights its dialogue and character-focused stories; the cited description does not establish that every choice changes relationships or endings, so choose it for that narrative emphasis rather than a specific promise about branching outcomes.

For a story that shares space with combat: Metaphor: ReFantazio
Metaphor: ReFantazio pairs thematic storytelling about politics, religion, and community with turn-based RPG combat, according to GameSpot. The combat format is an important part of the choice: it is less suitable if you want a purely narrative experience or specifically want to avoid turn-based battles.
For a recent award-recognized narrative: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 won Best Narrative at the 2026 Game Developers Choice Awards, which honor games of 2025. The awards page names Despelote, Dispatch, Ghost of Yōtei, and Split Fiction as finalists. The accolade is a useful signal if you are browsing recent story-led games, not an objective ranking or a substitute for choosing the genre and pacing you prefer.

For authored pacing or open-ended role-playing
If your main decision is how much freedom you want, TechRadar’s contrast between Baldur’s Gate 3 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is useful: the former is presented as open-ended, while the latter offers a more linear, curated tale. Neither structure is inherently better. Pick openness if customizing and exploring matter most; pick a more curated arc if you would rather follow a strongly authored story.
