The WNBA sends the league’s top eight teams to the playoffs, seeds them by regular-season record regardless of conference, and plays three rounds: a best-of-three first round, best-of-five semifinals and best-of-seven Finals. The first-round home schedule and Finals length changed beginning in 2025; the format below reflects the WNBA’s 2026 rules.
How teams qualify and get seeded
Eight teams qualify based on their regular-season records. The WNBA does not reserve a set number of playoff places for each conference: teams from across the league are ranked together. The WNBA’s 2026 postseason FAQ describes qualification and seeding by record. The sources cited there do not explain how tied records are resolved, so no tie-break procedure is specified here.
How the playoff bracket works
The opening matchups are fixed by seed:
- No. 1 plays No. 8.
- No. 4 plays No. 5.
- No. 2 plays No. 7.
- No. 3 plays No. 6.
Winners advance within their half of the bracket to the semifinals; the two semifinal winners meet in the Finals. Teams are not reseeded after the first round, according to the WNBA’s 2021 format announcement. The WNBA playoff page shows the live bracket and results for the current season, which can change as games are played.
Series lengths and home-court schedules
Each round is a best-of series: it ends as soon as one team has won enough games to advance. The higher seed has home-court advantage, but the exact home sequence depends on the round.

These are the formats listed by the WNBA for 2026. A scheduled deciding game is played only if the series is still unresolved; for example, a team that wins the first two games of a first-round series advances without a third game.
What changed in 2025
The WNBA announced on October 10, 2024 that, effective in 2025, the first round would switch from a 2-1 home pattern to 1-1-1, and the Finals would expand from best-of-five to best-of-seven. Before that change, the higher seed hosted Games 1 and 2 of the first round, with the lower seed hosting Game 3 if necessary; the Finals also ended after a team won three games. The current Finals home pattern is 2-2-1-1-1.

In its 2024 announcement, the league said the first-round change would guarantee each team a home game in the series. Older descriptions of a best-of-five Finals or a 2-1 first-round schedule refer to the format before the 2025 season.

The WNBA’s 2026 FAQ lists September 27 as the start of that season’s postseason. That date is specific to 2026, not a standing rule for future seasons. For current matchups, scores and series progress, use the league’s playoff bracket.
